2022 Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council Election
As part of the local elections in Wales on 5 May 2022, the 33 seats of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council were up for election. The previous full council election took place in May 2017. Results summary Labour regained a majority control of the council at the 2022 local elections. The former Independent leader of the council, Nigel Daniels, lost his seat. 2022 Welsh Local Elections
The 2022 Welsh local elections are due to be held on 5 May 2022 to elect members of all twenty-two local authorities in Wales. They are being held alongside other local elections in the United Kingdom. The last elections were held in 2017. Background In the last local elections in 2017, 1,271 seats were elected. The Labour Party won 468 seats, independent candidates won 309 seats, Plaid Cymru won 208 seats, the Conservative Party won 184 seats and the Liberal Democrats won 63 seats. Other parties including the Green Party won 22 seats. The 2022 Welsh local elections were initially scheduled for 2021, to give councillors a four-year term, but they were delayed to 2022 to avoid clashing with the 2021 Senedd election. The 2021 Local Government and Elections (Wales) Act permanently changed the term length for councillors from four years to five years. Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council
Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council ( cy, Cyngor bwrdeistref Sirol Blaenau Gwent) is the governing body for Blaenau Gwent, one of the Subdivisions of Wales, Principal Areas of Wales. History The borough council was created in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 as a lower-tier Districts of Wales, district council with borough status in the United Kingdom, borough status. Gwent County Council provided county-level services for the area. The county council was abolished in 1996 and Blaenau Gwent became a Local government in Wales, principal area with county borough status, with the council taking over the functions previously performed by the county council. Borough status allows Blaenau Gwent to give the chair of the council the title of mayor. However, the council discontinued the role of mayor in 2017, with the last mayor being Barrie Sutton. Brynmawr
Brynmawr (; , ,) is a market town, community and electoral ward in Blaenau Gwent, Wales. The town, sometimes cited as the highest town in Wales, is situated at above sea level at the head of the South Wales Valleys. It grew with the development of the coal mining and iron industries in the early 19th century. Until the reorganisation of local authorities in 1974, Brynmawr was administered as part of the county of Brecknockshire. Cwm (from cy, Y Cwm, ) is a former coal mining village, community (Wales), community and Wards and electoral divisions of the United Kingdom, electoral ward south of Ebbw Vale in the county borough of Blaenau Gwent, Wales, within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire, United Kingdom. David Clifford Davies (born 26 November 1959), commonly known as Dai Davies, is a Welsh politician. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Blaenau Gwent constituency in South Wales from 2006 to 2010, representing the Blaenau Gwent People's Voice Group. Llanhilleth
Llanhilleth () is a village, community and an electoral ward on the A467 road between Ebbw Vale and Crumlin in Blaenau Gwent, Wales. Two large mounds in the field behind the Carpenter's Arms are the remains of the medieval Llanhilleth castle which originally had two large, stone-built towers. Part of the Monmouthshire Canal ran through the parish; the Ebbw River forms the western boundary of the parish. The twin-belled Church in Wales church of St Mark is located on Brooklyn Terrace, near the High Street junction. It is in the benefice of Abertillery with Cwmtillery with Llanhilleth with Six Bells, in the deanery of Pontypool, and was built in 1898. Nearby are the villages of Aberbeeg and St Illtyd, within the community, the latter of which contains the former parish church. In the far south of the community is the village of Swffryd.
