Ebbw Vale South
Ebbw Vale South is a community and electoral ward in Blaenau Gwent, South Wales, including the south of the town of Ebbw Vale. It was formed in 2010 from part of that community. The population in 2011 was 4,274. Governance Ebbw Vale South is also an electoral ward, coterminous with the community, which elects two councillors to Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council. A few days after being elected as an Independent councillor for the ward at the 2022 local election, Carl Bainton caused some controversy by changing his allegiance to Labour. Community (Wales)
A community ( cy, cymuned) is a division of land in Wales that forms the lowest tier of local government in Wales. Welsh communities are analogous to civil parishes in England. There are 878 communities in Wales. History Until 1974 Wales was divided into civil parishes. These were abolished by section 20 (6) of the Local Government Act 1972, and replaced by communities by section 27 of the same Act. The principal areas of Wales are divided entirely into communities. Blaenau Gwent (; ) is a county borough in the south-east of Wales. It borders the unitary authority areas of Monmouthshire and Torfaen to the east, Caerphilly to the west and Powys to the north. South Wales
South Wales ( cy, De Cymru) is a loosely defined region of Wales bordered by England to the east and mid Wales to the north. Generally considered to include the historic counties of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, south Wales extends westwards to include Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. Ebbw Vale (; cy, Glynebwy) is a town at the head of the valley formed by the Ebbw Fawr tributary of the Ebbw River in Wales. It is the largest town and the administrative centre of Blaenau Gwent county borough. The Ebbw Vale and Brynmawr conurbation has a population of roughly 33,000. Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council ( cy, Cyngor bwrdeistref Sirol Blaenau Gwent) is the governing body for Blaenau Gwent, one of the Subdivisions of Wales, Principal Areas of Wales. History The borough council was created in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 as a lower-tier Districts of Wales, district council with borough status in the United Kingdom, borough status.
