2022 Bridgend County Borough Council Election
The 2022 Bridgend County Borough Council election took place on 5 May 2022 as part of the 2022 Welsh local elections. Fifty one councillors were elected to Bridgend County Borough Council. Welsh Labour gained the council from no overall control. Ward boundary changes A local government boundary review of electoral wards took place prior to the election, by the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales. The recommendations were accepted by the Welsh Government in July 2021. For Bridgend County Borough, the number of wards were to be reduced, from 39 to 28. The number of councillors was to drop from 54 to 51. These changes were to take effect from the 2022 council election. Results Labour regained a majority of seats at this election and therefore regained control of the council. 2022 Welsh Local Elections
The 2022 Welsh local elections are due to be held on 5 May 2022 to elect members of all twenty-two local authorities in Wales. They are being held alongside other local elections in the United Kingdom. The last elections were held in 2017. Background In the last local elections in 2017, 1,271 seats were elected. The Labour Party won 468 seats, independent candidates won 309 seats, Plaid Cymru won 208 seats, the Conservative Party won 184 seats and the Liberal Democrats won 63 seats. Other parties including the Green Party won 22 seats. The 2022 Welsh local elections were initially scheduled for 2021, to give councillors a four-year term, but they were delayed to 2022 to avoid clashing with the 2021 Senedd election. The 2021 Local Government and Elections (Wales) Act permanently changed the term length for councillors from four years to five years. Bridgend Central
Bridgend Central ( cy, Canol Pen-y-bont) is the name of an electoral ward in Bridgend County Borough, Wales. It covers part of the county town of Bridgend. The ward elects three councillors to Bridgend County Borough Council. The ward was created following the recommendations of a 2019 local government boundary review, with the merger of the former county wards of Morfa and Newcastle. According to the 2011 UK Census, the population of the Morfa ward was 4,692 and in the Newcastle ward it was 5,421. Rest Bay (electoral Ward)
Rest Bay is an electoral ward in the town of Porthcawl in Bridgend County Borough, Wales. It is on the coast overlooking bay and beach of the same name. The ward covers the residential area northwest of Porthcawl town centre, bordered to the south by Severn Road (and the Porthcawl West Central ward) and partially to the east by West Park Drive (and the Nottage ward). Most of the northern part of the Rest Bay ward includes the course of the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. Rest Bay is a ward to Porthcawl Town Council, electing three of the nineteen town councillors. Nottage
Nottage () is a small village part of Porthcawl in Bridgend County Borough, Wales. It is also the name of an electoral ward to the town and county councils. History The original ancient village of Nottage, built in a defensive position from the outset, was sited on a small hill near an inlet leading to the sea. The location is speculated to have been chosen to reduce the risks of attacks by Vikings. Artifacts found in and near Nottage hint the presence in the area of the Beaker culture, Celts and Romans. In the 12th Century, William Fitz Robert, 2nd Earl of Gloucester gave 'New Town in Margam' to his supporter Richard of Cardiff. Nottage lay just outside it. Already the location of a Celtic church, Norman influence grew in the area, and the Parish of Newton-Nottage was formed in around 1300. Newton, Porthcawl
Newton ( cy, Drenewydd yn Notais) is a village located near the seaside resort town of Porthcawl, in Bridgend County Borough, Wales. History and amenities Newton village dates from the 12th century and St John the Baptist Church was founded by the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem 800 years ago and originally built as a fortress, still overlooks the village green. The Jolly Sailor pub, the oldest in Porthcawl, and the Ancient Briton pub also overlook the green. 130 metres to the south of the church lies St. John's water well, the water from which is reputed to have healing properties. Garw Valley
Garw Valley (Welsh: ''Cwm Garw'') is a community and coterminous electoral ward in the north of Bridgend County Borough, South Wales. As the name suggests, it follows and encompasses the valley of the River Garw. The community includes the village of Blaengarw at the head of the valley, followed by Pontycymer and Llangeinor on the river, with Bettws between the Garw and the Llynfi in the south. Garw Valley is bordered to the west by Maesteg, Llangynwyd Middle and Llangynwyd Lower; to the east by Ogmore Valley and to the south by Ynysawdre and St Bride's Minor. Attractions include the Garw Valley Railway, a four and half mile narrow gauge steam railway, which volunteers began re-laying in 2016. Coity Higher
Coity Higher is a community in Bridgend County Borough, south Wales. It contains the north western suburbs of Bridgend which includes the villages of Litchard and Coity. The southern boundary of the community adjoins the community of Brackla, while the northern border is defined by the M4 motorway. Notable buildings and landmarks within the community include Coity Castle, Parc Prison, the 14th century Church of St Mary, Pendre Hospital, Ty Mawr House and a burial chamber. At the 2001 census, the community's population was 835, being re-measured at 6,078 t the 2011 Census. Bridgend County Borough Council ( cy, Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr) is the governing body for Bridgend County Borough, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. Welsh Conservative Party
The Welsh Conservatives ( cy, Ceidwadwyr Cymreig) is the branch of the United Kingdom Conservative Party that operates in Wales.
