2017 Split Local Elections
The 2017 Split local elections were held on 21 May and 4 June 2017 for the Mayor of Split and members of the Split city council. Ivo Baldasar, the 71st mayor who served from 2013 to 2017 ran for re-election to a second four-year term, ultimately finishing in 9th place with 0.80% of the vote in the first round. As no candidate won an absolute majority of the vote in the first round, a second round of elections was held on 4 June 2017 between the two highest-ranked candidates in terms of popular vote: Željko Kerum of the Croatian Civic Party, who was previously the 70th Mayor of Split from 2009 to 2013, and Andro Krstulović Opara of the Croatian Democratic Union. Krstulović Opara narrowly won the run-off taking 46.2% of the votes against 44.3% for Kerum. Turnout was 45.5% in the first round and 38.1% in the second round. Andro Krstulović Opara
Andro Krstulović Opara () (born 22 May 1967) is a Croatian politician and art historian who served as Mayor of Split from 2017 to 2021. Early life and education Krstulović Opara was born on 22 May 1967 in Split where he finished elementary and high school, after which he enrolled at the Zagreb Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences from which he graduated in art history and archaeology. In 1993 he graduated from the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna and in 1995 from the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. Krstulović Opara is currently enrolled in the doctoral program Building heritage at the Zagreb Faculty of Architecture. Croatian Growth ( hr, Hrvatski rast, acronym ''Hrast'' is a Croatian word for Oak tree) or Hrast-Movement for Successful Croatia was a political party in Croatia established in 2012. Youth Action ( hr, Akcija mladih or AM) is a Liberalism, liberal political party in Croatia founded in 2005 in Lovran. Croatian Party Of Pensioners
The Croatian Party of Pensioners ( hr, Hrvatska stranka umirovljenika or HSU) is a Croatian centre-left political party that is currently led by Veselko Gabričević. When the party was founded, few people took it seriously and many commentators speculated that the ultimate purpose of HSU was to take away pensioners' votes from rejuvenated SDP and thus help ruling HDZ remain in power. However, the party gradually built its organisation throughout the country and slowly rose in popularity due to both HDZ and left-centre cabinets of Ivica Račan refusing to honour a Constitutional Court verdict that ordered the government to pay back pensions that had been denied in the early 1990s.
