2011 Yukon General Election
The 2011 general election in Yukon, Canada, took place on October 11, 2011, to return members to the 33rd Yukon Legislative Assembly. The incumbent government was led by Darrell Pasloski, who was elected as leader of the Yukon Party at a convention on May 28, 2011, replacing former Premier Dennis Fentie. The Yukon Party won its third majority government, with Elizabeth Hanson's NDP becoming the Official Opposition, replacing the Liberal Party, whose leader Arthur Mitchell was unable to return to the Assembly. Pre-writ period Redistribution In 2008, the Yukon Assembly struck a committee to review the electoral district boundaries for this election. The committee decided to increase the number of seats in the territory to 19. Yukon now matches the other territorial assemblies in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut in terms of the number of seats. 33rd Yukon Legislative Assembly
The 33rd Yukon Legislative Assembly commenced on October 12, 2011, after Yukon voters returned a majority Yukon Party government under the leadership of Darrell Pasloski. The Yukon NDP became the official opposition while the Liberals took third place status. The membership in this Legislature increased by one seat after the boundary redistribution. Leadership changes After losing opposition status in the general election and going from five seats to two, the Liberal party has been beset with leadership issues. Former leader Arthur Mitchell resigned after being defeated in the redistricted Copperbelt North riding. He was replaced by interim leader Darius Elias who left the leadership position and the caucus on August 17, 2012. By default Sandy Silver became leader of the party as the sole remaining MLA. The Yukon Liberal Party (french: Parti libéral du Yukon) is a political party in the territory of Yukon, Canada. The party is not organizationally linked to the federal Liberal Party of Canada in any official manner. Sandy Silver, MLA for Klondike, is the Leader of the Yukon Liberal Party and Premier of Yukon. History After twenty years as a minor party, the Yukon Liberal Party won the 2000 general election and formed a government under Premier Pat Duncan. The government, however, was reduced to minority government status. Duncan called a snap election for November 2002 in the hope of regaining her government's majority. The party was almost completely wiped out, however, by the Yukon Party. Duncan won the Liberals' sole seat in the Yukon Party's landslide. Klondike (electoral District)
Klondike is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of Yukon in Canada. One of Yukon's eight rural ridings, it is also the oldest riding in Yukon, first established in 1905. The riding includes Dawson City and its environs, as well as Eagle Plains. Klondike was the only seat won by the Yukon Party in the 2000 territorial election and the only seat held by the Liberals prior to the 2016 territorial election. Yukon First Nations Party
The Yukon First Nation Party was a territorial First Nations political party in Yukon, Canada. It was registered three days before the 2011 general election was called, by Gerald Dickson Sr., a member of the Kluane First Nation. Dickson created the party with the encouragement of several First Nation elders, who felt that their issues were not being heard. The party believed in sustaining the traditional laws of respect, honour, love, compassion, and harmony. The 2006 Yukon general election was held on October 10, 2006, in Yukon, Canada, to elect members of the 32nd Yukon Legislative Assembly. Takhini-Kopper King
Takhini-Kopper King is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of Yukon in Canada. It was created in 2009 out of much of the former riding of McIntyre-Takhini.
