33rd Yukon Legislative Assembly
The 33rd Yukon Legislative Assembly commenced on October 12, 2011, after Yukon voters returned a majority Yukon Party government under the leadership of Darrell Pasloski. The Yukon NDP became the official opposition while the Liberals took third place status. The membership in this Legislature increased by one seat after the boundary redistribution. Leadership changes After losing opposition status in the general election and going from five seats to two, the Liberal party has been beset with leadership issues. Former leader Arthur Mitchell resigned after being defeated in the redistricted Copperbelt North riding. He was replaced by interim leader Darius Elias who left the leadership position and the caucus on August 17, 2012. By default Sandy Silver became leader of the party as the sole remaining MLA. Yukon Party
The Yukon Party (french: Parti du Yukon) is a conservative political party in Yukon, Canada. It is the successor to the Yukon Progressive Conservative Party. Formation With Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's Progressive Conservative federal government's decreasing popularity, the Yukon Progressive Conservatives decided to sever its relations with the federal Conservatives, and renamed itself the "Yukon Party" in 1991. The party's first leadership convention in June 1991 was won by Chris Young, a 21-year-old former president of the Yukon Progressive Conservatives' youth chapter. Whitehorse Centre
Whitehorse Centre is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of the Yukon in Canada. It was created in 1992 from an amalgamation of the ridings of Whitehorse North Centre and Whitehorse South Centre and readjusted in 2002 following the dissolution of the neighbouring riding of Riverside. The riding encompasses the downtown core of the City of Whitehorse (including Marwell) between the escarpment and the Yukon River. Whitehorse Centre is home to most of Whitehorse's businesses and government offices. Whitehorse Centre is bordered by the ridings of Riverdale North, Takhini-Kopper King, and Mountainview. Lois Moorcroft
Lois Moorcroft (born August 21, 1954) is a Canadian politician, who represented the electoral districts of Mount Lorne (1992-2000) and Copperbelt South (2011-2016) in the Yukon Legislative Assembly. She is a member of the Yukon New Democratic Party. Early career Moorcroft was born in Oshawa, Ontario, and grew up in Whitby, Ontario. She studied history at Trent University in Peterborough where she earned a bachelor's degree. Prior to entering territorial politics, Moorcroft served as a librarian at Yukon College's Whitehorse campus. She also served on the Yukon Employment Standards Board and has held positions on the boards of the Yukon College Employees' Union and the Yukon Federation of Labour. Porter Creek South
Porter Creek South is an electoral district (Canada), electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Yukon Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly of Yukon, Canada. It comprises part of the Whitehorse, Yukon, Whitehorse subdivision of Porter Creek and is the smallest riding in Whitehorse. It is bordered by the ridings of Porter Creek Centre, Porter Creek North, and Takhini-Kopper King. Porter Creek South is also the former seat of Pat Duncan, 6th Premier of Yukon, Premier of the Yukon, who served from 2000 to 2002. Mike Nixon (politician)
Mike Nixon is a Canadian politician, who was elected to in the Yukon Legislative Assembly in the 2011 election. He represented the electoral district of Porter Creek South as a member of the Yukon Party caucus until 2016. Political career Nixon first attempted to enter politics as the Yukon Party candidate in Yukon New Democrat stronghold of Whitehorse Centre, which had been vacated following the death of New Democrat leader Todd Hardy from cancer. Nixon lost his bid to Hardy's successor, Liz Hanson, finishing third in the December 13, 2010 by-election. Nixon sought election once again the following year during the 2011 Yukon election as the Yukon Party candidate in the Whitehorse riding of Porter Creek South, long-considered a Liberal stronghold. Watson Lake is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of the Yukon Territory in Canada. The riding is one of the Yukon's eight rural ridings and is one of the oldest ridings in the Yukon. David Laxton
David Laxton is a Canadian politician who was elected to in the Yukon Legislative Assembly in the 2011 election. He served as the 10th Speaker of the Yukon Legislative Assembly and represented the electoral district of Porter Creek Centre on behalf of the Yukon Party until his resignation from caucus in mid-2016. Political career Laxton originally ran under the Liberal banner in the 2006 Yukon election in the riding of Porter Creek Centre but was defeated by incumbent Yukon Party Cabinet minister Archie Lang. Kluane
Kluane is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of the Canadian territory of Yukon. It is named after Kluane National Park, which is within the riding. It is one of the Yukon's eight rural districts. Kluane represents all Yukon communities and residents along the Alaska Highway west of Whitehorse and south to Alaska.
