Challenge Tour
The Challenge Tour is the second-tier men's professional golf tour in Europe. It is operated by the PGA European Tour and, as with on the main European Tour and the European Senior Tour, some of the events are played outside Europe. History The tour was introduced in 1986 and was initially called the ''Satellite Tour''. The Order of Merit was introduced in 1989, with the top five players on it winning membership of the European Tour for the following season. The following year the tour was renamed the Challenge Tour. Up to 1993 the Challenge Tour rankings were based on each player's best several results, but since 1994 it has been a straightforward money list, with all results counting. Players who are successful on the Challenge Tour qualify for membership of the European Tour the following year. Twenty players earn direct promotion to the European Tour. Marius Thorp
Marius Thorp (born 28 June 1988) is a Norwegian professional golfer. Thorp had a successful amateur career, winning the European Amateur in 2005 and claiming the silver medal for lowest amateur in the 2006 Open Championship. He turned professional in 2007 and had immediate success, claiming four wins on mini-tours in Scandinavia. In 2010 Thorp joined the Challenge Tour and found further success at that level, with six top-10s in his debut season. He ended 2010 16th in the standings, which earned him a European Tour card for 2011. In September 2011 he announced that he was taking a break from golf, saying that his motivation and desire were no longer present. He hails from Bærum and represented the local golf club Bærum GK. Alstom Open De France
The Open de France is a European Tour golf tournament. Inaugurated in 1906 it is the oldest national open in Continental Europe and has been part of the European Tour's schedule since the tour's inception in 1972. The 100th edition of the event was held in 2016. The 2022 edition will take place between 22 and 25 September on the Golf National course. There will be €3 million of prize fund. Last edition played was the 2019 tournament, won by Nicolas Colsaerts. Originally played at La Boulie, the tournament has been hosted by many different venues, but since 1991, it has been held at the Le Golf National near Paris every year except for 1999 and 2001. Since the turn of the millennium, the Fédération Française de Golf has made a concerted effort to enhance the stature of the event. Robert Rock
Robert Rock (born 6 April 1977) is an English professional golfer. He played on the European Tour from 2003 to 2022. He has won twice on the tour, the 2011 BMW Italian Open and the 2012 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. He lost to Irish amateur Shane Lowry in a playoff at the 2009 3 Irish Open, but still collected the first prize of €500,000. Early life Rock was born in Armitage, near Lichfield in Staffordshire, and grew up and was educated in nearby Rugeley. Professional career Rock joined the European Tour as an affiliate member in 2003. BMW Italian Open
The DS Automobiles Italian Open ( it, Open d'Italia) is the men's national open golf championship of Italy. It was founded in 1925 and, except for 1933 and during World War II, was played annually until 1960. After an eleven-year hiatus, it returned in 1971 when it was one of five tournaments in Continental Europe that were included on the British PGA Order of Merit circuit. The following year of that circuit has since been recognised as the first official season of the European Tour, and the Italian Open is one of few tournaments that have featured on the schedule every year. The 2018 event was the 75th edition of the championship. Pablo Martín (golfer)
Pablo Martín Benavides (born 20 April 1986) is a Spanish professional golfer. Martín was born in Málaga, and attended Oklahoma State University in the United States. He was named the Jack Nicklaus Award winner, the Haskins Award winner in 2006 as the best collegiate golfer in the world. He won the 2005 Porter Cup. In April 2007, Martín became the first amateur ever to win a European Tour event when he captured the Estoril Open de Portugal title. As an amateur, he had to forfeit the winner's prize money of €208,330, but the win still granted him exemption on the European Tour until the end of 2009. He turned professional in June 2007, and completed the season playing on both the European Tour and the PGA Tour, relying on sponsors' invitations for PGA Tour events. Alfred Dunhill Championship
The Alfred Dunhill Championship is a men's professional golf tournament which is played in South Africa. It is part of the Southern African Sunshine Tour and is one of several events in South Africa that are co-sanctioned by the more prestigious European Tour. History The tournament was founded in 2000, but its origins lie in Dunhill's sponsorship of the South African PGA Championship between 1995 and 1999. Following the 1999 Alfred Dunhill PGA Championship, the company decided to discontinue their association with the South African PGA, and create their own stand alone tournament. The first event was held in January 2000 at the Houghton Golf Club in Johannesburg, and replaced the South African PGA Championship on the European Tour calendar. Peter Gustafsson
Peter Gustafsson (born 17 August 1976) is a Swedish professional golfer, born in Orust, Sweden. He turned professional in 1999. After just missing out on automatic graduation from the Challenge Tour in 2004, Gustafsson was medalist at the European Tour Qualifying School to gain his place on the European Tour for 2005. In his début season he was runner up in two tournaments, the Jazztel Open de España en Andalucía and the Omega European Masters, and finished in 46th place on the Order of Merit. Despite that, he missed out on the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award, which went to Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño of Spain. In subsequent seasons, he was unable to consistently produce those same high levels of performance, and lost his place on the European Tour in 2007. Daniel Denison (golfer)
Daniel Denison (born 14 February 1985) is an English professional golfer who plays on the Challenge Tour. Denison broke both of his legs in a car accident in 2007, an injury that threatened his career. He joined the Challenge Tour in 2009 where he struggled in his rookie year. He improved in 2010, finishing 39th on the Order of Merit while recording a runner up finish at the Kärnten Golf Open. He picked up his first win in 2011 at the ECCO Tour Championship. He also recorded a runner up finish at the Saint-Omer Open. Alexandre Kaleka
Alexandre Kaleka (born 6 March 1987) is a French professional golfer. Kaleka turned professional in July 2009 and won his first tournament as a professional, the Allianz EurOpen de Lyon on the Challenge Tour. The win gave him a full exemption on the Challenge Tour in 2010, where a consistent season saw him finish in 20th place on the Order of Merit, giving him the final available European Tour card for 2011. He further improved his status at the end-of-year qualifying school. He struggled in his rookie year on the European Tour, making only 10 of 27 cuts while finishing 159th on the Order of Merit. His best result came at the Irish Open where he finished in fifth. Kaleka returned to the Challenge Tour in 2012. In September, he won the M2M Russian Challenge Cup.
