2006 Women's Hockey World Cup
The 2006 Women's Hockey World Cup was the 11th edition of the Women's Hockey World Cup field hockey tournament. It was held from 27 September to 8 October 2006 in Madrid, Spain. The Netherlands won the tournament for the sixth time after defeating Australia 3–1 in the final. Defending champions Argentina won the third place match by defeating Spain 5–0. Qualification Each of the continental champions from five federations and the host nation received an automatic berth. The European federation received one extra quota based upon the FIH World Rankings. Alongside the five teams qualifying through the Qualifier, twelve teams competed in this tournament. The 2004 Women's Pan American Cup was the 2nd edition of the Women's Pan American Cup. It was held between 21 and 28 April 2004 in Bridgetown, Barbados. The tournament doubled as the qualifier to the 2006 World Cup to be held in Madrid, Spain. The winner would qualify directly while the runner-up would have the chance to obtain one of five berths at the World Cup Qualifier in Rome, Italy. Sarah Garnett is an International Field Hockey Umpire, from New Zealand. She umpires for Tauranga and is currently on the elite FIH World Panel for umpires. Garnett was named New Zealand's Female Umpire of the Year for 2006.
