The 2005 U-18 Junior World Cup was an ice hockey tournament held in Břeclav, Czech Republic and Piešťany, Slovakia between August 9, 2005 and August 14, 2005. The venues used for the tournament were Zimní Stadion in Břeclav and Zimny Stadion in Piešťany. Canada defeated the Czech Republic 5-3 in the final to claim the gold medal, while Finland defeated Russia to capture the bronze medal. Ice Hockey
Ice hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an ice skating rink with lines and markings specific to the sport. It belongs to a family of sports called hockey. Břeclav
Břeclav (; german: Lundenburg) is a town in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 24,000 inhabitants. Piešťany
Piešťany (; german: Pistyan, hu, Pöstyén, pl, Pieszczany , cs, Píšťany ) is a town in Slovakia. It is located in the western part of the country within the Trnava Region and is the seat of its own district. It is the biggest and best known spa town in Slovakia and has around 28,000 inhabitants. Etymology The name Piešťany comes from Slovak ''Piesok'' (sand), referring to local sandbanks. U-18 Junior World Cup
The Hlinka Gretzky Cup is an annual international under-18 ice hockey tournament administered by Hockey Canada, the Czech Ice Hockey Association, and the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation. Held since 1991, it has been contested under various titles and in various countries, including Japan, Mexico, and Canada. From 1997 through 2017, hosting duties for the event alternated between, and were later split between, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. During this period, the event was known as the Nations Cup, the U-18 Junior World Cup, and Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. From 2018 through 2023, the tournament will alternate between Edmonton/Red Deer, Alberta and Břeclav, Czech Republic/Piešťany, Slovakia. The event is not sanctioned by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), which holds its own U18 championship in April. The following is a chronicle of events during the year 2005 in ice hockey. National Hockey League *2004–05 NHL season: The Stanley Cup was not awarded for the first time since 1919 as a result of the 2004–05 NHL lockout. *On February 16, commissioner Gary Bettman announced the final cancellation of the NHL season. The lockout would be resolved on July 13 when an agreement was reached in principle. The lockout officially ended on July 22 when the owners ratified the agreement, ending the 310-day labour stoppage. *On October 5, the puck dropped to open the 2005–06 NHL season in 15 cities, as for the first time in NHL history, all 30 teams were in action on the same night. The NHL also introduced a new, modernized logo, and implemented several rule changes, most notably the shoot out as part of the league's relaunch.
