A symphony is an extended musical composition in Western classical music, most often for orchestra. Orlando Pantera
Orlando Monteiro Barreto (1 November 1967, in São Lourenço dos Órgãos – 1 March 2001, in Praia, Santiago), better known as Orlando Pantera was a Cape Verdean singer and composer. Three of its songs were recorded in the album ''Porton d'nôs Ilha'' (''Gates of the Island'') by the group Os Tubarões. In the early 1990s, he was part of different musical groups including Pentágono, the Capeverdeans Jazz Band quintet and Arkor. He was an author of series of composition which he earned him a nomination of the Composer of the Year in 1993. Along with João Lucas, he was part of the spectacular band "Dan Dau", a Portuguese company by Clara Andermatt which they collaborated in 1998 in ''Uma História da Dúvida''. He wrote songs for some workers of the Cape Verdean dancing company Raiz di Polon. A local championship was founded in 1953 before independence, when the islands were still part of the Portuguese Empire. Cesária Évora GCIH (; 27 August 194117 December 2011), more commonly known as Cize, was a Cape Verdean singer-songwriter. She received a Grammy Award in 2004 for her album '' Voz d'Amor''. Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva" for performing without shoes, she was known as the "Queen of Morna". Évora began singing as a young woman in bars in her hometown of Mindelo, and came to international prominence in the 1990s. Biography Early life Cesária Évora was born on 27 August 1941 in Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde. When she was seven years old her father, Justino da Cruz Évora, who was a part-time musician, died, and at the age of ten she was placed in an orphanage, as her mother Dona Joana could not raise all six children. Vasco Martins
Vasco Martins is a Cape Verdean musician and composer. Born in Queluz, Portugal, in 1956, he lives now in Calhau, Cape Verde. Biography Self-taught, he began his studies in 1974. He was a member of the band Colá in 1976, but then went to Portugal where he studied with Fernando Lopes Graça and later to France to pursue his musical education with Henri-Claude Fantapié. In 1979 he recorded his first LP. He returned to Cape Verde, and it is there that he has created most of his work as a composer and instrumentist, but also as musicologist and producer, he organized and founded the Baía das Gatas Music Festival along with his friends in 1984, the first music festival in the nation. He released more albums including ''Quinto Mundo'' (1989), ''Eternal Cycle'' (1995), ''Memórias Atlânticas'' (''Memories from the Atlantic'') (1998) and ''Lunário Perpétio'' (2001).
