Cesária Évora GCIH (; 27 August 194117 December 2011), more commonly known as Cize, was a Cape Verdean singer-songwriter. She received a Grammy Award in 2004 for her album ''Voz d'Amor''. Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva" for performing without shoes, she was known as the "Queen of Morna". Évora began singing as a young woman in bars in her hometown of Mindelo, and came to international prominence in the 1990s. Biography Early life Cesária Évora was born on 27 August 1941 in Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde. When she was seven years old her father, Justino da Cruz Évora, who was a part-time musician, died, and at the age of ten she was placed in an orphanage, as her mother Dona Joana could not raise all six children. At the age of 16, she was persuaded by a friend to sing in a sailors' tavern. She grew up at the house in Mindelo which other singers used from the 1940s to the 1970s, at 35 Rua de Moeda. Morna (music)
The morna (pronunciation in both Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole: ) is a music and dance genre from Cape Verde. Lyrics are usually in Cape Verdean Creole, and instrumentation often includes cavaquinho, clarinet, accordion, violin, piano and guitar. Morna is widely considered the national music of Cape Verde, as is the fado for Portugal, the tango for Argentina, the merengue for Dominican Republic, the rumba for Cuba, and so on. The best internationally known morna singer was Cesária Évora. The ''coladeira'' (; Cape Verdean Creole: ''koladera,'' ) is a music genre from the Cape Verde islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by a variable tempo, a 2-beat bar, and (in its most traditional form) a harmonic structure based in a cycle of fifths. The lyrics structure is organized in strophes that alternate with a refrain. The tone is generally joyful and themes often include social criticism. Instrumentation typically includes a guitar, a ''cavaquinho'', and percussion, among others. According to oral tradition, the genre originated in the 1930s when the composer Anton’ Tchitch’ intentionally speeded up the tempo of a '' morna.'' In the 1950s, it began to incorporate electronic influences, and beginning in the 1980s it was influenced by compas music from Haiti. ''Voz d'Amor'' (Cape Verdean Creole for the ''Voice of Love'', Portuguese: ''Voz de Amor'') is the ninth album by Cesária Évora. The album reached number 3 in Poland, the first Cape Verdean and West African artist to reach the Polish Top 10 charts and number 2 in the Billboard 200 World Albums Chart. The album sold about 400,000 copies. In Switzerland, the album reached number 57 below the Top 50 charts in October and remained in the Swiss charts for six weeks. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album in 2004, the first to win from Cape Verde or a part of West Africa. The sixth song "Monte Cara" relates to a mountain west of Mindelo and the eleventh song of the album "Pomba" features the lyrics "Subi Somada, a bô di diante, a mi ditras" which relates to Assomada's feature being in the upper parts. Pedro Manuel Guerra Mansito (born 2 June 1966 in Güímar, Tenerife) is a Spanish singer-songwriter. Biography Guerra is the son of Pedro Guerra Cabrera, the first President of the Canarian Parliament. Orquesta Aragón is a Cuban musical band formed on 30 September 1939, by Orestes Aragón Cantero in Cienfuegos, Cuba. The band originally had the name ''Ritmica 39'', then ''Ritmica Aragón'' before settling on its final form. Though they did not create the ''Cha-cha-cha'', they were arguably the best charanga in Cuba during the 1950s and 1960s. Their trade-marks included high-class instrumentalists playing in tight ensemble style, and rhythmical innovations which kept their sound up to date. Chucho Valdés
Jesús Valdés Rodríguez, better known as Chucho Valdés (born October 9, 1941), is a Cuban pianist, bandleader, composer and arranger whose career spans over 50 years. An original member of the Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, in 1973 he founded the group Irakere, one of Cuba's best-known Latin jazz bands.
