1997–98 Australian Baseball League Season
The 1997–98 Australian Baseball League season was the 9th season of the original Australian Baseball League, contested between eight teams representing state and regional capitals: , , , , , , and . The Melbourne Reds became the first three-time champions defeating the Gold Coast Cougars 2 games to 0 in the Championship series, in front of a small home crowd of 600 at the Melbourne Ballpark. Teams Each of the 8 teams from the previous season returned, however the Sydney Blues changed their name to the Sydney Storm after legal action taken by Cricket NSW during the offseason. In the season opening press release, The league called for expressions of interest in a licence to reform the Canberra Bushrangers for the season, The Bushrangers previously folded at the end of the season. Brendan Kingman
Brendan Kingman (born 22 May 1973) is an Australian baseball player and coach for the Sydney Blue Sox of the Australian Baseball League. Playing career Kingman was one of the most respected and prolific power hitters in Australia in the 90s and 2000s. He still holds the record as the longest serving Australian Baseball representative. His career in baseball started at age 6 when asked to participate in a tee-ball game, and he hit a home run in his first at-bat. Kingman was a part of every representative team in Australia throughout the rest of his playing career. The 1997–98 Sydney Storm season was the 6th season for the team, but first season known as the Storm. As was the case for the Franchises previous seasons they competed in the Australian Baseball League (ABL). Offseason During the offseason the franchise changed its name from the Sydney Blues to the Sydney Storm, This was done as a result of legal action taken by Cricket NSW, Who also used the name Blues for its teams. Carrara Stadium (known commercially as Metricon Stadium) is a stadium on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, located in the suburb of Carrara. The stadium is primarily used for Australian rules football, serving as the home ground of the Gold Coast Suns, who compete in the Australian Football League.
