1999 Northwest Territories General Election
The 1999 Northwest Territories general election was held on December 6, 1999. This was the first election under the new boundaries that were created when Nunavut was carved out of the Northwest Territories. 19 members were elected, five fewer than in the previous election. The main issues in this election were Native self-government and control over the territory's resources. On polling day, Yellowknife was caught in an extreme blizzard that cut off-road traffic and supplies. This was also the last election in Canada in the 20th century. The election was conducted under a non-partisan rules as the government operates under consensus, and Elections N.W.T. has not recognized parties since 1905. The Western Arctic New Democratic Party, a quasi-official offshoot of the New Democratic Party of Canada, fielded candidates and published signs and campaign material, as an attempt to revive a partisan legislature. Legislative Assembly Of The Northwest Territories
The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, or Legislative Council of the Northwest Territories (with Northwest hyphenated as North-West until 1906), is the legislature and the seat of government of Northwest Territories in Canada. It is a unicameral elected body that creates and amends law in the Northwest Territories. Permanently located in Yellowknife since 1993, the assembly was founded in 1870 and became active in 1872 with the first appointments from the Government of Canada. Until 2014, the assembly was officially defined under federal law as "Legislative Council". However, under Northwest Territories territorial law, it was defined as "Legislative Assembly". The federal name was changed when the Northwest Territories Act was rewritten in 2014. Under different periods of its history it has alternated names. Floyd K. Roland (born November 23, 1961) is a politician from Northwest Territories, Canada. He was the 11th premier of the Northwest Territories, having held office from October 17, 2007 to October 26, 2011. Previously a town councillor and deputy mayor of Inuvik, Roland was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in the 1995 Northwest Territories general election, after defeating the incumbent candidate Fred Koe. He was re-elected in the 1999 Northwest Territories general election, winning in a landslide with 83% of the vote. Sandy Lee
Sandy Lee (born 1964) is a South Korean-born-Canadian lawyer and politician, who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1999 to 2011. Political career Territorial Assembly Lee was elected to the legislature for the first time in the 1999 Northwest Territories general election, defeating future MLA Dave Ramsay and another candidate. She was re-elected to her second term in office in the 2003 Northwest Territories general election, winning with a landslide 80 per cent of the vote. Lee was the Minister for Health and Social Services, Status of Women and Disabilities. 2011 federal election On March 26, 2011, Lee resigned as MLA so she could run in the 2011 federal election for the Conservatives in the Western Arctic. Vince Steen
Vince Steen (June 17, 1941 in Aklavik, Northwest Territories – February 3, 2007) was a politician. He served as a municipal councilor of Tuktoyaktuk and later became mayor. Afterwards he was also a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Prior to politics he was also civil servant, heavy equipment operator and a licensed watercraft operator. Early life Steen was born in 1941 in Aklavik in the Mackenzie Delta region of the Northwest Territories. He lived his whole life in northern Canada. Steen was educated at a local residential school in his hometown of Aklavik for seven years. He went to post secondary education at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.
