Jackie Jacobson (born Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories) is a Canadian politician, who represents the electoral district of Nunakput in the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Political career Jabobson began his political career as mayor of Tuktoyaktuk. During his tenure he was forced to deal with problems caused by erosion of the coast line and damage to the community from the Beaufort Sea. Jacobson ran as a candidate in the Nunakput electoral district in the 2007 Northwest Territories general election. He defeated incumbent Calvin Pokiak and two other candidates with 42% of the vote to win his first term in office. Pokiak first became a politician on the municipal level serving as a councilor on the Hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk council. He later served as mayor for the community. Nellie Cournoyea
Nellie Cournoyea (born March 4, 1940 in Aklavik, Northwest Territories) is a Canadian politician, who served as the sixth premier of the Northwest Territories from 1991 to 1995. She was the first female premier of a Canadian territory and the second female premier in Canadian history after Rita Johnston of British Columbia. Cournoyea is of mixed Norwegian and Inupiaq heritage. Before entering politics, Cournoyea was an announcer and station manager for CBC North in Inuvik, and a land claims worker for the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada. She was first elected to the territorial Legislative Assembly in 1979, representing the electoral district of Western Arctic until it was dissolved in 1983, and then the new district of Nunakput for the remainder of her career in politics. Paulatuk
Paulatuk is a hamlet located in the Inuvik Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada. It is located adjacent to Darnley Bay, in the Amundsen Gulf. The town was named for the coal that was found in the area in the 1920s, and the Siglitun spelling is ''Paulatuuq'', "place of coal". The area has been inhabited by humans, including the Thule and Copper Inuit, since roughly 1000 CE. Most recently, it is part of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region. Paulatuk was incorporated as a hamlet in 1987 and celebrated the 50th anniversary of its settlement in 2015. Vince Steen (June 17, 1941 in Aklavik, Northwest Territories – February 3, 2007) was a politician. He served as a municipal councilor of Tuktoyaktuk and later became mayor. Afterwards he was also a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Prior to politics he was also civil servant, heavy equipment operator and a licensed watercraft operator. Early life Steen was born in 1941 in Aklavik in the Mackenzie Delta region of the Northwest Territories. He lived his whole life in northern Canada. Steen was educated at a local residential school in his hometown of Aklavik for seven years. He went to post secondary education at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. 1999 Northwest Territories General Election
The 1999 Northwest Territories general election was held on December 6, 1999. This was the first election under the new boundaries that were created when Nunavut was carved out of the Northwest Territories. 19 members were elected, five fewer than in the previous election. The main issues in this election were Native self-government and control over the territory's resources. On polling day, Yellowknife was caught in an extreme blizzard that cut off-road traffic and supplies. This was also the last election in Canada in the 20th century. The Inuvik Region or ''Beaufort Delta Region'' is one of five administrative regions in the Northwest Territories of Canada.
