David Krutko
David Krutko (born November 11, 1957) is a retired territorial level politician in Northern Canada and a former speaker of the Northwest Territories legislature. Krutko was first elected to the Northwest Territories legislature in the 1995 general election. He defeated former Premier Richard Nerysoo in an upset victory. He was re-elected in the 1999 general election, winning in a landslide with 75% of the vote. He was subsequently re-elected by acclamation in the 2003 general election. After being re-elected to his third term in office he was elected speaker on December 11, 2003 after Tony Whitford was appointed commissioner. Aklavik
Aklavik (Inuvialuktun: ''Akłarvik'') (from the Inuvialuktun meaning '' barrenground grizzly place'') is a hamlet located in the Inuvik Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada. Until 1961, with a population over 1,500, the community served as the regional administrative centre for the territorial government. Because of repeated flooding in this area, the government developed Inuvik to the east. It was meant to entirely replace Aklavik, but many of the residents of the original community persevered and kept Aklavik going. Its 2018 population was 623. The hamlet's mayor is Andrew Charlie. History Aklavik began to develop in the early 1900s after the Hudson's Bay Company opened a trading post in 1912. The Roman Catholic Church later established a mission here in 1926. 2003 Northwest Territories General Election
The 2003 Northwest Territories general election was held on November 24, 2003, to elect the 19 members of the Legislative Assembly. The election was called on October 27. Premier Stephen Kakfwi had previously chosen not to run. 2015 Northwest Territories General Election
The 2015 Northwest Territories general election was held November 23, 2015. Under the territory's Fixed election dates in Canada, fixed election date legislation, the election was supposed to be held on October 5, 2015, however, since the federal election date of October 19, 2015, overlapped with that date, the N.W.T. government moved the date of the territorial election. The election selected 19 members of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Term extension debate In March 2014 the 17th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, current Legislative Assembly voted to extend its term from four years to five. The act will need to be approved by the federal government. The 2011 Northwest Territories general election was held on October 3, 2011. Nineteen members were returned to the 17th Legislative Assembly from single member districts conducted under first-past-the-post voting system. The territory operates on a consensus government system with no political parties; the premier is subsequently chosen by and from the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Henry Zoe is a politician and convicted criminal from Northwest Territories, Canada. Political career Zoe was first elected to the Northwest Legislature in the 1987 Northwest Territories general election in the North Slave riding. 1999 Northwest Territories General Election
The 1999 Northwest Territories general election was held on December 6, 1999. This was the first election under the new boundaries that were created when Nunavut was carved out of the Northwest Territories. 19 members were elected, five fewer than in the previous election. The main issues in this election were Native self-government and control over the territory's resources. On polling day, Yellowknife was caught in an extreme blizzard that cut off-road traffic and supplies. This was also the last election in Canada in the 20th century.
