1989 United Kingdom Local Elections
Local elections were held in the United Kingdom in 1989. The Labour Party had the highest projected national vote share, but the Conservative Party, in power at Westminster, gained the most seats. The national projected share of the vote was Labour 42%, Conservative 36%, Liberal Democrats 19%. The Conservatives gained 92 seats, Labour gained 35 seats and the Liberal Democrats lost 175 seats. Margaret Thatcher (1983)
Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher (; 13 October 19258 April 2013) was a British politician and stateswoman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. Devon ( , historically known as Devonshire , ) is a ceremonial and non-metropolitan county in South West England. Cumbria ( ) is a ceremonial and non-metropolitan county in North West England, bordering Scotland. Cleveland is a land of hills and dales from the River Tees to Vale of Pickering, England. The name means “cliff-land”. The area corresponds to the former Langbaurgh Wapentake. The North York Moors national park, established in 1952, covers part of it.
