1986–87 FIS Cross-Country World Cup
The 1986–87 FIS Cross-Country World Cup was the 6th official FIS Cross-Country World Cup, World Cup season in cross-country skiing for men and ladies. The World Cup started in Ramsau am Dachstein, Ramsau, Austria, on 10 December 1986 and finished in Oslo, Norway, on 15 March 1987. Torgny Mogren of Sweden won the overall men's cup and Marjo Matikainen-Kallström, Marjo Matikainen of Finland won the women's. Vladimir Smirnov (skier)
Vladimir Mikhaylovich Smirnov (russian: Влади́мир Миха́йлович Смирно́в; born 7 March 1964) is a Kazakh former cross-country skier who raced from the 1982 until 1991 for the USSR and, later, for Kazakhstan. He is the first Olympic champion from independent Kazakhstan and the most decorated Olympian in history of Kazakhstan. He is also a vice president of the International Biathlon Union. Smirnov is a former member of International Olympic Committee. Early life Smirnov was born to Russian parents in Shchuchinsk, Kazakh SSR. During the Soviet period, he trained at the Armed Forces sports society in Alma-Ata. Career Smirnov made his debut in the FIS Cross-Country World Cup on 18 December 1982 at Davos in a 15 km race, finishing in a 17th place. Lahti
Lahti (; sv, Lahtis) is a city and municipality in Finland. It is the capital of the region of Päijänne Tavastia (Päijät-Häme) and its growing region is one of the main economic hubs of Finland. Maurilio De Zolt
Maurilio De Zolt (born 29 September 1950 in San Pietro di Cadore, Province of Belluno) is an Italian cross-country skier who competed internationally from 1977 to 1997. His best known victory was part of the 4 × 10 km relay team that upset Norway at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, when he was 43 years old. He also won two silver medals in the Winter Olympics at 50 km (1988, 1992). Mikhail Devyatyarov
Mikhail Talgatovich Devyatyarov (russian: Михаи́л Талга́тович Девятья́ров; born 25 February 1959 in Chusovoy) is a former Soviet/Russian cross-country skier who competed from 1982 to 1992, training at Armed Forces sports society in Perm. He took the gold medal in the 15 km classical and the silver medal in the 4 × 10 km relay at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Devyatyarov also won two medals at the 1987 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with a silver in the 4 × 10 km relay and a bronze in the 15 km. He has taken two World cup victories. His best known victory was part of the 4 × 10 km relay team that upset Norway at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. Aki Tapani Karvonen (born 31 August 1957 in Valtimo) is a Finnish former cross-country skier who competed during the 1980s. He won three medals at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, with a silver in the 15 km, and two bronze medals in 50 km and the 4 × 10 km relay, respectively. Thomas Wassberg
Thomas Lars Wassberg (born 27 March 1956) is a Swedish former cross-country skier. A fast skating style – push for every leg – is still called "Wassberg" after him in several countries. Wassberg's skiing idols when growing up were Sixten Jernberg and Oddvar Brå. He has described his mental strength and physical fitness as his greatest abilities as a skier, with his main weakness being a lack of sprinting ability. Wassberg won four Olympic gold medals: in 15 km (1980), 50 km (1984), and the 4 × 10 km relay (1984, 1988), and served as the Olympic flag bearer for Sweden in 1988. FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1987
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1987 took place 11–21 February 1987 in Oberstdorf, West Germany. Following the domination of the skating technique at the previous championships, the International Ski Federation (FIS) introduced separate cross-country skiing races in the classical technique and the freestyle technique at these championships. For the only time (besides the 1988 Winter Olympics), the relays consisted of four freestyle legs. Harri Tapani Kirvesniemi (born 10 May 1958, in Mikkeli) is a Finnish former cross-country skier who competed from 1980 to 2001. During his career he won six Olympic medals (all bronzes), and also the 50 km event at the Holmenkollen ski festival in 2000. He retired after being caught doping at the 2001 World Championship in Lahti. Career His biggest successes though were at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, where he earned a total of eight medals. This included one gold (15 km: 1989), three silvers (4 × 10 km relay: 1989, 1995. 1997), and four bronzes (15 km: 1982, 30 km: 1985, 4 × 10 km relay: 1982 (shared with East Germany), 1991). In 1998, he earned the Holmenkollen medal (shared with Fred Børre Lundberg, Larissa Lazutina, and Alexey Prokurorov).
