1986 Camden London Borough Council Election
The 1986 Camden Council election took place on 8 May 1986 to elect members of Camden London Borough Council in London, England. The whole council was up for election. Labour made big gains from the Conservatives across the borough: gaining Bloomsbury and one seat in Brunswick in the south, South End and the two remaining Highgate seats in the north-east, and Swiss Cottage in the north-west. The SDP–Liberal Alliance also won Fortune Green from the Conservatives. Camden Borough Council
Camden London Borough Council is the local authority for the London Borough of Camden in Greater London, England. It is a London borough council, one of 32 in the United Kingdom capital of London. Camden is divided into 18 wards, each electing three councillors. Following the 2018 election Camden London Borough Council comprised 43 Labour Party councillors, 7 Conservative Party councillors, 3 Liberal Democrat councillors and one for the Green Party. One Labour councillor defected to the Greens in October 2021. The council was created by the London Government Act 1963 and replaced three local authorities: Hampstead Metropolitan Borough Council, Holborn Metropolitan Borough Council and St Pancras Metropolitan Borough Council. Flick Rea
Felicity Marion Peel Rea (née Corbin, born c. 1937), known as Flick Rea, is an English Liberal Democrat politician in Camden, north west London, who for 35 years represented the Fortune Green ward on Camden Council, before her retirement in 2021. Early life and education Rea, originally named Marion Felicity Peel Corbin, was the daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Peel Corbin and his wife. Her father, a descendant of Sir Robert Peel, was headmaster at Huish's Grammar School. His daughter was educated at Weirfield School in Taunton. It had been her ambition to be an actress since the age of five, and she appeared in local amateur stage productions with the Pleiades Players and Taunton Thespians. King's Cross is a ward of the London borough of Camden, in the United Kingdom. The ward has existed since the creation of the borough on 1 April 1965 and was first used in the 1964 elections. The population of the ward at the 2011 Census was 11,843. In 2018, the ward had an electorate of 7,274. The Boundary Commission projects the electorate to rise to 8,459 in 2025. Sir Alan Thorpe Richard Wood (born 4 April 1954) is a British public servant who served from 2006 to 2015 as the corporate director for Children and Young People's Services in the London Borough of Hackney. Career Born in Stepney, Wood read social sciences at the University of York and then trained as a teacher at University of Birmingham, working as a history teacher from 1977. From 1982 until 1990 he was a Labour local councillor for the London Borough of Camden for the Kilburn ward. After 13 years as a teacher, Wood moved to work for the London Borough of Southwark's education department in 1990 as their head of pupil support and special educational needs. In 1997 he was promoted to deputy director of education, and in 2000 further still to director of education. Kate Allen (Amnesty International)
Katherine Allen (born 25 January 1955) was the Director of Amnesty International UK (AIUK) from 2000 to 2021. Early life and education Katherine Allen was the daughter of William Allen and Patricia Allen (née Middleton). She gained a BA (Hons) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Brasenose College, University of Oxford. Allen was made an Honorary Fellow by the university in 2006. Career Allen was a policy officer at the Greater London Council from 1977 to 1979. Piers Wauchope
Piers Andrew Charles Wauchope (born 1956) is a British barrister and politician who served as interim leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) between June and August 2019, following the resignation of Gerard Batten. Previously a member of the Conservative Party, Wauchope was a councillor representing Adelaide and later Belsize wards in the London Borough of Camden from 1998 to 2006, having unsuccessfully stood in the wards of Holborn (in 1986) and Bloomsbury (in 1994). He served as leader of the Conservative Group, and of the opposition, on Camden Council from 2000 to 2006, replacing Pamela Chesters. After leaving the Conservative Party, he joined UKIP and was elected to the NEC in 2015. Roy Shaw (politician)
Roy Edwin Shaw (21 July 1925 – 4 January 2008) was a Labour Party politician in London, England. He was the Leader of Camden London Borough Council from 1975 to 1982, serving on Camden Council and its predecessor councils continuously for 51 years until just before his death, making him the longest-serving councillor in the UK. Shaw was known nationally as an expert on local government. Early life and education Roy Shaw was born in 1925 to Edwin Victor and Edith Lily Shaw in Hampstead as the only son in a family of six children. His family home was in Highfield Road, West Hampstead. He was educated at Emmanuel Infant School and Beckford Junior School, before winning a scholarship to William Ellis, which was a grammar school at the time. Alan Greengross
Sir Alan David Greengross (15 April 1929 – 13 August 2018) was a British politician, who served as the final leader of the Conservative Party on the Greater London Council (GLC). Born in London, Alan's father Morris was Mayor of Holborn in the 1960s, while his sister Wendy became a well known counsellor. Greengross was educated at University College School in Hampstead, and then undertook National Service with the Royal Air Force before studying law at Trinity College, Cambridge. After graduation, he joined the family business, the precision engineering firm Indusmond (Diamond Tools) Ltd; he later became its chair and managing director. In 1959, he married Sally Rosengarten, who later became Director General of Age Concern England.
