American Soccer League (1933–1983)
The American Soccer League has been a name used by four different professional soccer sports leagues in the United States. The second American Soccer League was established in summer 1933 following the collapse of the original American Soccer League, which lasted from 1921 until spring 1933. The new league was created on a smaller scale and with smaller budgets. This league existed until over-expansion and financial limitations led to its collapse in 1983. Two successor leagues later operated. History In the fall of 1933, the second American Soccer League was established, surviving until 1983. Like the original ASL, this league operated primarily in the Northeastern United States for much of its existence. John Granville (soccer)
John Granville (born Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago) is a retired professional football goalkeeper from Trinidad & Tobago. Granville was born on the island of Tobago, in Scarborough. In 1978, he played for the Southern California Lazers and was selected to the American Soccer League all-star team. Granville led the league in goalkeeping with a 0.99 goals against average and posted seven clean sheets. In 1979, he played for the Cleveland Cobras, also of the ASL. He was a goalkeeper and represented Trinidad and Tobago at international level. Granville was on the Trinidad and Tobago team at the 1975 Pan American Games. He has been goalkeeping coach at Wycombe Wanderers and Swindon Town. Tony Douglas (born August 16, 1952, in Point Fortin, Trinidad) is a retired professional football (soccer) forward from Trinidad and Tobago. He spent his professional career in the United States, playing in the North American Soccer League, American Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League. He earned seven caps, scoring one goal, with the Trinidad and Tobago national football team. In 1974, Douglas signed with the Los Angeles Aztecs of the North American Soccer League. As the fifth shooter, he converted on the game-winning penalty kick for the Aztecs in the 1974 NASL Championship Final. Forwards (also known as attackers) are outfield positions in an association football team who play the furthest up the pitch and are therefore most responsible for scoring goals as well as assisting them. As with any attacking player, the role of the forward relies heavily on being able to create space for attack. Sid Wallace (born 30 May 1957) was an English footballer who most famously played for Waterford United. Wallace's first competitive match was a rugby league one, playing for Greenburg Street in the Wigan Amateur league, where he remained for four years before switching codes to the round ball. He signed for Everton Youths, where his teammates included Cliff Marshall, the Toffees' first ever black player, and Dave Jones (footballer born 1956). He also recalled Bob Latchford as the star at the club, an England international who was a prolific goalscorer. Syd was himself not shy in front of goal, but in season 1973/74, after making 22 appearances and scoring 21 times, he had the misfortune to break his leg against Blackpool. Ramón Antonio Mifflin Páez (born 5 April 1947) is a former Peruvian football player. Career He started his career in Centro Iqueño in 1963, by 1965 he played in Defensor Arica, and signed with Peruvian team Sporting Cristal in 1968 after being named player of the year. He then started in the 1970 FIFA World Cup for the Peru national football team with Héctor Chumpitaz, Teófilo Cubillas, Roberto Challe, and Hugo Sotil which were eliminated. A midfielder is an outfield position in association football. Midfielders may play an exclusively defensive role, breaking up attacks, and are in that case known as defensive midfielders.
