American Soccer League (1933–1983)
The American Soccer League has been a name used by four different professional soccer sports leagues in the United States. The second American Soccer League was established in summer 1933 following the collapse of the original American Soccer League, which lasted from 1921 until spring 1933. The new league was created on a smaller scale and with smaller budgets. This league existed until over-expansion and financial limitations led to its collapse in 1983. Millard Lang
Millard T. Lang (August 7, 1912 in Baltimore, Maryland – August 4, 2002 in Baltimore, Maryland) was a U.S. soccer forward and lacrosse player who is a member of both the National Soccer Hall of Fame and the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Youth and college Lang began playing soccer for a team in the Baltimore Police Athletic League when he was thirteen. Lang attended high school at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute where he had an exceptional athletic record. He lettered in five sports: soccer, lacrosse, basketball, football and tennis. He also ran track. He was captain of his school’s soccer team, which won two city prep championships under his leadership. Philadelphia German-American
Philadelphia German-American was an American soccer club based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that was an inaugural member of the professional American Soccer League. Before the 1941/42 season the club became known as the Philadelphia Americans. During the 1953/54 season, the franchise was bought by a trucking magnate and renamed the Uhrik Truckers. The team earned a "mini-double" in 1955 winning the league championship and league cup (the Lewis Cup). The club also won the National Amateur Cup in 1933 and 1934 and the Lewis Cup in 1941, 1943 and 1958. Razzo Carroll
Henry "Razzo" Carroll (July 12, 1909 – January 14, 1999) was a U.S. soccer forward who played in both the first and second American Soccer Leagues. He led the league in scoring in 1934. He also earned two caps, scoring one goal, with the U.S. national team in 1928. Carroll began his club career with the Bayonne Rovers S.C. in the late 1920s. He was selected for the U.S. team at the 1928 Summer Olympics. On May 20, 1928, the U.S. lost by a score of 11-2 to Argentina in the first round. Carroll scored the second of the two U.S. goals. As the tournament was single elimination, the U.S. now had free time so they traveled to Warsaw where they tied Poland 3-3, Carroll playing in that game. Archie Stark
Archibald McPherson Stark (December 21, 1897 – May 27, 1985) was a U.S. soccer player who became the dominant player in U.S. leagues during the 1920s and early 1930s. He spent nine seasons in the National Association Football League and another twelve in the American Soccer League. He also earned two caps, scoring five goals, as a member of the U.S. national team. He holds the U.S. single-season scoring record with 67 goals (including 8 hat-tricks) scored during the 1924–25 season which is the current World Record. He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1950. Fairlawn Rovers
Fairlawn Rovers was a U.S. soccer team which existed from at least 1918 to at least 1949. It was based in Fairlawn, Rhode Island. Leagues There is very little information on the leagues Fairlawn Rovers belong to over the years. In 1922, they won the Pawtucket and District League. Then, in 1934, it entered the New England Division of the American Soccer League for two seasons. The latest mention of Fairlawn Rovers comes in the biography of David Pacheo, a member of the Connecticut Soccer Hall of Fame. 1985 United Soccer League Season
The 1985 USL season was the United Soccer League's second and final season. The season was abruptly canceled after the pre-season League Cup and one regular season game. History The United Soccer League played its first season in 1984 as the de facto United States second division. The previous second division, the American Soccer League, had collapsed in 1983 and the United Soccer League intended to establish itself as a fiscally sound replacement for the failed league. The USL played the 1984 season with nine teams in three divisions. In February 1985, the North American Soccer League and USL began negotiations to merge the two leagues. On March 5, USL President William Burfeind announced the merger would not take place. The NASL collapsed soon afterwards, along with six of the USL franchises.
