1985 United Soccer League Season
The 1985 USL season was the United Soccer League's second and final season. The season was abruptly canceled after the pre-season League Cup and one regular season game. History The United Soccer League played its first season in 1984 as the de facto United States second division. The previous second division, the American Soccer League, had collapsed in 1983 and the United Soccer League intended to establish itself as a fiscally sound replacement for the failed league. The USL played the 1984 season with nine teams in three divisions. In February 1985, the North American Soccer League and USL began negotiations to merge the two leagues. On March 5, USL President William Burfeind announced the merger would not take place. The NASL collapsed soon afterwards, along with six of the USL franchises. United Soccer League (1984–85)
The United Soccer League was a professional soccer league in the United States in the mid-1980s. History As the second incarnation of the American Soccer League was crumbling, five of the eight ASL teams (Carolina Lightnin', renamed the Charlotte Gold, Dallas Americans, Jacksonville Tea Men, Oklahoma City Slickers, renamed Stampede, and Rochester Flash) left to founded the USL. They also took the ASL's commissioner, William Burfeind, with them as their first commissioner. Fiscal responsibility, regional rivalries and measured expansion were a few of the cornerstones on which the organization was to be structured. A league rule allowed only four of eighteen roster spots be taken by foreign players. In addition a salary cap was imposed on member clubs. Initially, the league was to have both indoor and outdoor seasons so that clubs could play year round. United Soccer League (USL), formerly known as United Soccer Leagues, is a soccer league in the United States and Canada. It organizes several men's and women's leagues, both professional and amateur. Men's leagues currently organized are the USL Championship, USL League One, USL League Two, and the youth Super Y League. A new women's league, the USL W League, began play in 2022. Randy Phillips (soccer)
Randy Phillips (born Dallas, Texas) is a retired U.S. soccer goalkeeper who spent two seasons in the North American Soccer League, one in the American Soccer League and two in the United Soccer League. He was also a two-time first team All American goalkeeper at Southern Methodist University. Phillips grew up in Dallas, Texas and attended Southern Methodist University where he played on the men's soccer team from 1977 to 1980. He was a three-time All American, being selected to the second team in 1978 and the first team in 1979 and 1980. In 1980, Phillips signed with the Minnesota Kicks of the North American Soccer League. He played in ten games, but the Kicks folded at the end of the season and on December 8, 1981, the Tulsa Roughnecks acquired Phillips in the Dispersal Draft. Jim Tietjens
Jim Tietjens is a retired American soccer goalkeeper who played professionally in the North American Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League and United Soccer League. Tietjens graduated from Oakville High School. He then attended St. Louis University where he played on the men's soccer team from 1978 and 1979. He was inducted into the Billikens Hall of Fame in 1995. In 1980, he turned professional with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the North American Soccer League. He spent three season with the Strikers as a backup to Jan van Beveren except for two games during his rookie season when injuries put him in the nets. He suffered a knee injury requiring surgery during a February 1983 indoor tournament and remained a backup for the 1983 season. Delroy Allen (born 6 October 1958 Montego Bay, Jamaica) is a retired Jamaican-American soccer goalkeeper who played professionally in the North American Soccer League, American Soccer League and United Soccer League. Early life Allen attended boys elementary school in Montego Bay. He then moved to London, England in 1967. Tony Crescitelli
Tony Crescitelli (born January 11, 1957, in Altavilla Irpina, Italy) is a retired Italian-American soccer forward who spent six seasons in the North American Soccer League and earned one cap with the U.S. national team in 1983. Youth Crescitelli was born in Italy and immigrated to the United States with his family when he was 11. He settled in Long Beach, New York and attended North Adams State College where he played Division III NCAA soccer from 1975 to 1978. He was a prolific scorer over his four season with Mohawks. Wolfgang Rausch
Wolfgang Rausch (born 30 April 1947) is a German former professional footballer who played as a defender. He made a total of 257 appearances in the Bundesliga during his playing career. Career Rausch was born in Aachen. In 1979, he left Germany for the United States where he signed with the Dallas Tornado of the North American Soccer League. Rausch played three outdoor and one indoor seasons with the Tornado. While with the Tornado, he also played the 1979–1980 Major Indoor Soccer League season on loan with the Detroit Lightning. In the fall of 1981, Rausch left the Tornado and signed with the New Jersey Rockets of the MISL. Zequinha (footballer, Born 1948)
José Márcio Pereira da Silva (born 17 November 1948), better known in the United States as Zequinha is a Brazilian former footballer, who played in Brazil and the United States. Biography Born in Leopoldina, Minas Gerais, Zequinha started his career in 1967 at Flamengo and he left to play for Botafogo two years later. After six season there, he then made the transfer to Grêmio in 1975 and stayed on for three years, before moving to São Paulo FC for one season. With the popularity of the North American Soccer League at its zenith, Zequinha moved to the U.S. and joined the Dallas Tornado in 1979. Rather than go home during the off-season, he chose to play indoor soccer in the MISL for the Detroit Lightning. Teófilo Cubillas
Teófilo Juan Cubillas Arizaga (; born 8 March 1949) is a Peruvian former footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. He was selected as Peru's greatest ever player in an IFFHS poll, in which he was also included in the world's Top 50. He was renowned for his technique, shooting ability and free kick ability. Nicknamed ''El Nene'' ''(The Kid)'', he was part of the Peru national team that won the 1975 Copa América. Mark Schwartz (soccer)
Mark Schwartz is a retired American soccer forward who played in the United Soccer League and the third American Soccer League. He was the 1984 USL Rookie of the Year. In 1979, Schwartz graduated from Miramar High School where he was a star soccer player. During his three high school seasons, he scored 104 goals. He then attended Appalachian State University where he played on the men's soccer team. He graduated in 1982 and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. In 1984, Schwartz turned professional Fort Lauderdale Sun of the United Soccer League. He was the Rookie of the Year and playoff MVP.
