1929 International Lawn Tennis Challenge
The 1929 International Lawn Tennis Challenge was the 24th edition of what is now known as the Davis Cup. 24 teams would enter the Europe Zone, while five would enter the America Zone. Egypt and Monaco participated for the first time. The United States defeated Germany in the Inter-Zonal play-off, but would lose to France in the challenge round, giving France their third straight title. The final was played at Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France on 26–28 July. George Lott
George Martin Lott (October 16, 1906 – December 3, 1991) was an American tennis player and tennis coach who was born in Springfield, Illinois, United States. Lott is mostly remembered as being one of the greatest doubles players of all time. He won the U.S. title five times with three different partners: John Hennessey in 1928; John Doeg in 1929 and 1930; and Les Stoefen in 1933 and 1934. At the U. S. championships singles in 1928, Lott beat Christian Boussus and John Doeg before losing to Frank Hunter in the semifinals. In 1931 Lott beat defending champion Doeg in the semi finals before losing to Ellsworth Vines in the final. In 1934 Lott became a touring professional, thereby giving up his amateur status and the ability to play in Grand Slam tournaments. Germán Upmann
Germán Upmann Machin (14 November 1910 — 1 September 1998) was a Cuban tennis player. Upmann, who was born in Havana, is a descendant of German banker Hermann Dietrich Upmann, best known for creating the H. Upmann brand of cigars. In 1929 he featured in two Davis Cup ties for Cuba, the first against Mexico at home in Havana and the second away in Detroit against the United States. He also competed in the main draw of the U.S. National Championships that year and fell in the second round to Jack Mooney. At the 1930 Central American and Caribbean Games, Upmann won a silver medal for Cuba, partnering Gustavo Vollmer in the men's doubles event. Wilmer Allison
Wilmer Lawson Allison Jr. (December 8, 1904 – April 20, 1977) was an American amateur tennis champion of the 1930s. Allison's career was overshadowed by the arrival of Don Budge, although he was both a fine singles player and, along with his frequent partner, John Van Ryn, a great doubles player. At the University of Texas at Austin, Allison was the Intercollegiate tennis champion in 1927. One of Allison's earliest tournament wins was the 1928 Canadian Championship, where he won the final over doubles partner Van Ryn 6–2, 6–4, 6–3. Career Right-handed, Allison's greatest triumph was winning the 1935 U.S. Championship singles, defeating Fred Perry in the semifinals and Sidney Wood in the finals, both in three sets. Gustavo Vollmer
Gustavo Vollmer-Ravelo (died 29 August 1954) was a Cuban tennis player. He was of German descent. Vollmer appeared in three Davis Cup ties for Cuba, against Mexico and the United States in 1929, then Australia in 1932. His two career singles wins both came against Mexican players and he won a set against Harry Hopman when he played Australia. In Havana in 1930 he won the men's singles competition at the Central American and Caribbean Games.
