1908 French Grand Prix
The 1908 French Grand Prix was a Grand Prix motor race held at Dieppe on 7 July 1908. Formula Changes The race was run under a new formula agreed in Ostend in 1907. There was no fuel consumption limit, but the cars had a minimum weight of 1100 kilograms, and a maximum cylinder bore of 155 millimetres. This formula differed from the regulations in place for the American Vanderbilt Cup series, which discouraged American manufacturers from entering the race. Lewis Strang drove the single American entrant, the Thomas Flyer. D. Napier & Son cars were disqualified from the race due to their use of Rudge-Whitworth center locking hubs, which the organizers believed were unsafe. Dieppe (; Norman: ''Dgieppe'') is a coastal commune in the Seine-Maritime department in the Normandy region of northern France. Dieppe is a seaport on the English Channel at the mouth of the river Arques. A regular ferry service runs to Newhaven in England. Motobloc was a French automobile manufacturer, building vehicles from 1902 to 1931 in a factory in Bordeaux. History The company was a descendant of the earlier Schaudel marque, which was noted for the development of an innovative engine design which combined the engine, clutch and gearbox in a single main casing. Unfortunately, this made it so that engine oil would seep into the transmission. Schaudel constructed automobiles from 1900 to 1902, and in June 1902 "la Societe Anonyme des automobiles Motobloc" was established to continue vehicle production based on the Schaudel designs. Alessandro Umberto Cagno, Umberto Cagno, nicknamed ''Sandrin'' (2 May 1883 – 23 December 1971) was an Italian racing driver, aviation pioneer and powerboat racer. Apprenticed at 13 to a Turin engineering factory he was later recruited by Giovanni Agnelli as employee number 3 at F.I.A.T. (Fiat), where he progressed to be a test driver, Agnelli's personal driver and works racing team driver. In 1906 he won the inaugural Targa Florio in Sicily after switching to the Itala team. Cagno co-founded 'AVIS-Voisin' (''Atelier Voisin Italie Septentrionale'') to build Voisin aircraft under licence. The Ateliers Germain was a Belgian engineering manufacturing company based in Monceau-sur-Sambre near Charleroi.
