1904 Army Cadets Football Team
The 1904 Army Cadets football team represented the United States Military Academy in the 1904 college football season. In their first season under head coach Robert Boyers, the Cadets compiled a record, shut out five of their nine opponents, and outscored all opponents by a combined total of 136 to 27. The team's two losses were to Harvard and Princeton. In the annual Army–Navy Game, the Cadets defeated the Midshipmen Five members of the squad were honored by one or both of Walter Camp (WC) and Caspar Whitney (CW) on the All-America team. They are: center Arthur Tipton (WC-1, CW-1); back Henry Torney (CW-1); end Alexander Garfield Gillespie (WC-2); halfback Frederick Prince (CW-2); and tackle Thomas Doe (WC-3). Robert Boyers
Robert Emlen Boyers (December 25, 1876 – August 4, 1949) was a United States Army officer and American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the United States Military Academy from 1904 to 1905, compiling a record of 11–6–1. Boyers was born on December 25, 1876, and graduated from West Point in 1903. He served during World War I with the 3rd Infantry Division in France and with the 332nd Infantry Regiment in Italy. Henry Torney
Henry Walter Torney (November 12, 1881 – October 22, 1942) was an American football player and industrial engineer. He was an All-American at the halfback and fullback positions in 1904 and 1905 while attending the United States Military Academy. He later became an industrial engineer. Biography Torney was the son of George H. Torney, the Surgeon General of the United States Army. He played college football and was a member of the crew at Cornell from 1901 to 1902. He was admitted to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in June 1902. He played football for the Army football team, he was selected as a first-team All-American in 1904 (as a halfback) and 1905 (as a fullback). In 1904, Torney ran 105 yards against Yale. Alexander Garfield Gillespie
Alexander Garfield Gillespie (August 19, 1881 – January 17, 1956), sometimes known as A. G. Gillespie, was an American football player and a brigadier general in the United States Army. Biography Gillespie was born and raised on a family farm in Argentine Township, Michigan, near Gaines, Michigan. He taught in the Dodder school district from 1901 to 1902 and attended Michigan Normal College in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He passed an examination for admission to the United States Military Academy and, in 1902, enrolled at the Academy as a classmate of Douglas MacArthur, Joseph Stilwell and George S. Patton. He also played at the end position for the Army Black Knights football team and was captain of the 1905 Army football team. Arthur Charles "Bull" Tipton (June 5, 1882 – January 15, 1942) was an American football player and United States Army officer. He was a consensus first-team selection to the 1904 College Football All-America Team. Early years Tipton was born on June 5, 1882, at Las Vegas in the New Mexico Territory. He attended public schools in Las Vegas, Sacred Heart College in Denver, Braden's Preparatory School. West Point In 1901, Tipton enrolled at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. He graduated in 1905. While attending West Point, Tipton played for the Army Black Knights football team from 1903 to 1904 and was selected as a consensus first-team center on the 1904 College Football All-America Team.
