Alfred Benzon (1823–1884)
Alfred Nicolai Benzon (4 December 1823 – 19 December 1884) was a Danish pharmacist and industrialist. He was the proprietor of the Swan Pharmacy on Østergade in Copenhagen and founder of Denmark's first pharmaceutical company Alfred Benzon A/S. The company was later continued by his sons Alfred and Otto Benzon. Early life and education Benzon was born in Stubbekøbing on Falster, the son of merchant Lorenz Jacob Benzon (1790–1864) and Kirstine Hansen (1793–1862). From 1838 he was apprenticed to Gottfried Becker in the Royal Court Pharmacy in Copenhagen. He earned the MPharm degree in 1845 and was then employed by court pharmacist Rudel in Kiel and a pharmaceutical company in Hamburg before continuing his pharmaceutical studies in Bonn. Career The company was founded by Alfred Nicolai Benzon on 1 January 1849, when he acquired the pharmacy Svane Apotek on Østergade in Copenhagen and at the same time established a wholesale business. Annestine Beyer
Anna Kirstine "Annestine" Margrethe Beyer (4 May 1795 – 9 August 1884), was a Denmark, Danish reform pedagogue and pioneer on women's education. Early life Her parents were the sugar factory owner Hans Petri Beyer (ca. 1747–1806) and Elisabeth Smith Aarøe (*ca. 1763). She was educated at Døtreskolen af 1791. As an adult, she was employed as a teacher at the same school. Convinced of the importance of education of females, and eager to put her ideas of reforms in to practice, she reportedly dominated the school and placed the actual principal in the background. At that time, however, the opportunities for females to educate themselves was very limited and the institutions of learning open to them was largely limited to the capital of Copenhagen. Most female teachers in Denmark in the early 19th-century were employed as governesses rather than at schools. Jonathan Leunbach
Jonathan Høegh von Leunbach lɔjnbɑk(16 December 1884 – 24 September 1955) was a Danish doctor. During the interwar period he made a significant but controversial social effort to help women of limited means with sex education, birth control and abortion. Life and work Jonathan Leunbach was the son of Jørgen Høegh Leunbach (1842-1903) and Cassandra Wilhelmine Hjardemaal (1845-1925). He took a master's degree in medicine in 1912 and worked as a general practitioner in Brønderslev in Jylland 1915-1917. After some years of hospital employment in Copenhagen, he established himself here in 1922 as a general practitioner. Being a socialist, Leunbach was in favour of Wilhelm Reich's sexual political ideas. In the 1920s he was known to the public through his agitation for better sex education, safe and affordable contraception and better access to abortion, particularly for poor families with many children.
