Alfred Benzon (1823–1884)
Alfred Nicolai Benzon (4 December 1823 – 19 December 1884) was a Danish pharmacist and industrialist. He was the proprietor of the Swan Pharmacy on Østergade in Copenhagen and founder of Denmark's first pharmaceutical company Alfred Benzon A/S. The company was later continued by his sons Alfred and Otto Benzon. Early life and education Benzon was born in Stubbekøbing on Falster, the son of merchant Lorenz Jacob Benzon (1790–1864) and Kirstine Hansen (1793–1862). From 1838 he was apprenticed to Gottfried Becker in the Royal Court Pharmacy in Copenhagen. He earned the MPharm degree in 1845 and was then employed by court pharmacist Rudel in Kiel and a pharmaceutical company in Hamburg before continuing his pharmaceutical studies in Bonn. Knights Of The Order Of The Dannebrog
The Order of the Dannebrog ( da, Dannebrogordenen) is a Danish order of chivalry instituted in 1671 by Christian V. Until 1808, membership in the order was limited to fifty members of noble or royal rank, who formed a single class known as ''White Knights'' to distinguish them from the ''Blue Knights'' who were members of the Order of the Elephant. In 1808, the Order was reformed and divided into four classes. The ''Grand Commander'' class is reserved to persons of princely origin. It is awarded only to royalty with close family ties with the Danish Royal House. The statute of the Order was amended in 1951 by a Royal Ordinance so that both men and women could be members of the Order. Today, the Order of the Dannebrog is a means of honouring and rewarding the faithful servants of the modern Danish state for meritorious civil or military service, for a particular contribution to the arts, sciences or business life, or for working for Danish interests. Assistens Cemetery (Danish: Assistens Kirkegård) in Copenhagen, Denmark, is the burial site of many Danish notables as well as an important greenspace in the Nørrebro district. Inaugurated in 1760, it was originally a burial site for the poor laid out to relieve the crowded graveyards inside the walled city, but during the Golden Age in the first half of the 19th century it became fashionable and many leading figures of the epoch, such as Hans Christian Andersen, Søren Kierkegaard, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, and Christen Købke are all buried here. Garnison Church, Copenhagen The Garnison Church () is a church at Sankt Annæ Plads in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Baroque church was erected as a church primarily intended for military personnel stationed in the city. History In the 17th century, Copenhagen had become home to a sizeable garrison. A military church was built at Kastellet in 1670, but its modest size only allowed it to serve the personnel at the fortress. The rest of the troops in the city had to use Church of Holmen, a former anchor forge which had been converted into a naval church in 1619. When Sophie Amalienborg burned down in 1689, its chapel survived the flames and was subsequently put at the disposal of the Army.
