Österåker Municipality
Österåker Municipality ( sv, Österåkers kommun, ) is a municipality in Stockholm County in east central Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Åkersberga, with a population of 26,727 (2005). From 1974 to 1982 Österåker was part of Vaxholm Municipality. Its location by the Stockholm archipelago, in the Roslagen area, attracts both people who settles here, often commuting to Stockholm, and visiting tourists. Österåker boasts several golf courses, many possibilities for canoeing, horse riding, fishing and other nature activities. Österåker also has a historical significance, with at least three notable castles from the 17th and 18th centuries, with histories tracing even further back. Sweden's once largest quartz mine, the Härsbacka mine, lays within the municipality. Husarö
Husarö is an island in the Stockholm archipelago, northeast of Stockholm and south of Norrtälje. History Husarö housed pilots from the 15th century until 1912 when the pilot station was closed. There is a small pilot museum on the island. In 1719, during the Great Northern War, the Russians burnt the settlement and much of the forest on the island. The island's shop was burned down in May 2006. Transportation There are scheduled ferry services to the island and the journey takes around two and a half hours from the centre of Stockholm. Finnhamn
Finnhamn is a natural harbour on the island of Stora Jolpan in the Stockholm archipelago. It is in Österåker Municipality and lies to the east of Ingmarsö and to the west of Husarö. The name Finnhamn is derived from the Finnish boats which called into the harbour on their way to and from Stockholm, and is often now used for the island as well as the harbour. Finnhamn was bought by Stockholm City in 1943. A wealthy coal merchant built a house here in 1915 and this is now a youth hostel which is open all year round. Other facilities on Finnhamn are holiday cabins, and a seasonally open restaurant and shop. Ljusterö
Ljusterö is an island in Sweden. It is in the northern part of the Stockholm archipelago in Österåker Municipality, Stockholm County. It is approximately 65 kilometers north of central Stockholm. With an area of 62.05 km², it is the 17th largest island in the country. The island is accessed from the mainland by regular ferries from Östanå as well as by boat from central Stockholm. It has approximately 1,500 permanent residents and 25,000-30,000 residents during the summer season due to the large number of summer houses. Härsbacka Mine
Härsbacka mine ( sv, Härsbacka gruva) is a quartz and feldspar mine. It was once Sweden's foremost quartz mine. The mine was closed in 1946. The quartz and feldspar mined in Härsbacka are the main constituent of a large pegmatite dyke. This pegmatite dyke dips about 60 to 70° to the southeast and has a maximum thickness of 37 m. While quartz and feldspar are mostly mixed, pure zones of either occur. Most feldspar is pink microclineperthite and much lesser amounts are white oligoclase. There are lesser quantities of biotite, garnet, molybdenite and fluorite. About 230,000 tons of quartz have been mined in total from Härsbacka mine. In 1947 the mine was bought by Statens Vattenfallverk to turn it into an oil storage depot and it functioned as such until 1985 when it was emptied. Quartz is a hard, crystalline mineral composed of silica (silicon dioxide). The atoms are linked in a continuous framework of SiO4 silicon-oxygen tetrahedra, with each oxygen being shared between two tetrahedra, giving an overall chemical formula of SiO2. Fishing is the activity of trying to catch fish.
