The actual name means either from the county of Szilágy or of the noble clan of Szilagyi. The original Hungarian spelling of the name is "Szilágyi"; it has been modified to "Silaghi" in its Romanian variation. The Hungarian letters "Sz" and "gy" are replaced by the similarly pronounced "S" and "g" respectively in the Romanian version of the name. The Szilágyi clan exerted a strong influence over this region of Europe during the late to middle 14th century.

Zsolt Szilágyi (; born July 29, 1968, in Oradea, Bihor County, Romania) is a Romanian politician, member of the Hungarian People's Party of Transylvania (PPMT). He was a Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR/RMDSZ) deputy for Bihor County in the 1990–2004 period. At the 2009 European Parliament election he occupied the fourth position on the UDMR/RMDSZ list. Zsolt Loránt Szilágyi (born 29 June 1981) is a Romanian former footballer who played as a defender, spending his entire career at Universitatea Cluj. He was a fan favorite at '' The Red Caps'' for fidelity proven in time, being nicknamed ''Unicul căpitan'' (). Péter Zoltán Szilágyi (born 6 January 1981) is a Hungarian jurist and politician, member of the National Assembly (MP) from Politics Can Be Different (LMP) National List between 2010 and 2014. Michael Szilágyi de Horogszeg (; c. 1400 – 1460) was a Hungarian general who was Regent of Hungary, Count of Beszterce and Head of Szilágyi–Hunyadi Liga. Family He was born in the early 15th century as vice-ispán of Bács County, son of the captain of Srebrenik, Ladislaus Szilágyi and Catherine Bellyéni. Liliána Szilágyi (born 19 November 1996) is a Hungarian swimmer, who specialized in the butterfly events.
