Métis-sur-Mer
Métis-sur-Mer (, ) is a city in the La Mitis Regional County Municipality within the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec, Canada. It had a population of 594 in the Canada 2021 Census. The name "Métis" is said to come from a Mi'kmaq word meaning "meeting place"; "sur-mer" refers to its location on the Saint Lawrence River. History From 1818, John MacNider, the Scottish Seigneur of Métis started settling the area with Scottish immigrants. The city has a borough named MacNider, named after MacNider's family. Its territory corresponds to the former (pre-merger) village municipality of Métis-sur-Mer (Metis Beach). The town was a popular summer vacation spot for wealthy anglophone Montrealers. At the end of the 19th century, they spent their time in Métis-sur-Mer to flee waves of cholera. At the beginning of the 20th century, they did so again to escape outbreaks of the Spanish flu. John MacNider
John MacNider (10 June 1760 – 1829) was a Scottish-Quebecer businessman who pioneered the settlement and development of the Seigneurial system of New France, Seigneuries of Grand-Métis, Quebec, Grand-Métis and Métis-sur-Mer, Quebec, Métis-sur-Mer, Quebec. He is remembered as a particularly enterprising and visionary Seigneur, "a man with the dreams and ambition to pursue its (Metis's) development and with the means to do so". From nothing, he developed a thriving Scottish community into which he willingly put more money in than he ever took out. Though MacNider died three years before its completion, he played a crucial role in persuading Governor James Kempt, Sir James Kempt to build the road that would connect Métis by land to the outside world. The road became a settlement magnet, and Métis quickly became the principal population centre for the Gaspé, Quebec, Gaspé region. Haute-Gaspésie—La Mitis—Matane—Matapédia (formerly known as Matapédia—Matane) was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1979 until 2013. La Mitis is a regional county municipality in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region in eastern Quebec, Canada on the Gaspé peninsula. Baie-des-Sables () is a municipality in La Matanie Regional County Municipality in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec, Canada. Its elevation is . History The area was originally part of the Mitis seignory, purchased by Mathew MacNider in 1802, and acquired by his brother John MacNider in 1807. MacNider encouraged settlement of Scottish people, Scottish families there. Upon John Macnider's death in 1829, the seignory was inherited by the 2 sons of Adam Lymburner Macnider, nephew of John. In 1842, the geographic township of MacNider was created. In 1853, the Mission of L'Assomption-de-Notre-Dame was established, and in 1859, the Township Municipality of MacNider was formed when it ceded from the Municipality of Métis. In 1864, the MacNider Post Office opened. The Scottish settlers began to call the place Sandy Bay, or also Sandy Beach, in reference to a prominent sandbank on the western edge of the municipality. The 2016 Canadian census was an enumeration of Canadian residents, which counted a population of 35,151,728, a change from its 2011 population of 33,476,688. The census, conducted by Statistics Canada, was Canada's seventh quinquennial census. The official census day was May 10, 2016. Census web access codes began arriving in the mail on May 2, 2016. The 2016 census marked the reinstatement of the mandatory long-form census, which had been dropped in favour of the voluntary National Household Survey for the 2011 census.
