Haute-Gaspésie—La Mitis—Matane—Matapédia
Haute-Gaspésie—La Mitis—Matane—Matapédia (formerly known as Matapédia—Matane) was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1979 until 2013. It has the lowest percentage of visible minorities among all Canadian electoral districts (0.3%). Geography The district consists of the Regional County Municipalities of La Haute-Gaspésie, La Matapédia, Matane and La Mitis. The neighbouring ridings are Rimouski-Neigette—Témiscouata—Les Basques, Montmorency—Charlevoix—Haute-Côte-Nord, Manicouagan, Gaspésie—Îles-de-la-Madeleine, and Madawaska—Restigouche. History The riding was created in 1933 as "Matapédia—Matane" from parts of Matane riding. It was abolished in 1966 when it was redistributed into Matane and Rimouski ridings. La Martre, Quebec
La Martre () is a municipality in the Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine region of the province of Quebec in Canada. In addition to La Martre itself, the municipality also includes the communities of Cap-au-Renard, Christie, and Sainte-Marthe-de-Gaspé. History The area saw permanent settlement in the late 19th century and was originally called Rivière-à-la-Marthe, after the Marten River (French: ''Rivière à la Marthe'') that flows into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence there. The marten is found along this river's banks and is abundant in the Gaspé region. In 1923, the place separated from the municipality of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts to form the Township Municipality of Christie, named in honour of Robert Christie. Val-Brillant () is a municipality in eastern Quebec, Canada, at the base of the Gaspé peninsula. On the southern shores of the Lake Matapedia, Val-Brillant is part of the Matapédia Valley. The place was previously known by many other names: Lac-Matapédia; Brochu or Brouché, followed by Lac-à-Brochu until 1871 (after Pierre Brochu (1795–1871), the first settler in the valley in what is now Sayabec); McGowe (after an engineer working on the railroad); Cedar Hall from 1876 to 1912 (referring to the large hangar built from pieces of cedar that served as a coal shed for the railway); and Saint-Pierre-du-Lac (in honour of Pierre Brillant (1852–1911), missionary in the Matapedia Valley from 1881 to 1889 and parish priest from 1889 to his death). Saint-Vianney, Quebec
Saint-Vianney () is a municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec, located in La Matapédia Regional Council Municipality. It was known as Saint-Jean-Baptiste-Vianney until 1988. History The first settlers arrived in 1918. In 1920, several Franco-American families settled in the territory. The Langis mission was founded in 1921. Its name recalls that of the canton of Langis of which Saint-Vianney is a part, named in honor of Louis-Jacques Langis who was parish priest of L'Isle-Verte and canon in the cathedral of Rimouski. The post office was opened on April 12, 1922. The first chapel was inaugurated on December 24, 1922. The municipality was officially founded on August 27, 1926 under the name Saint-Jean-Baptise-Vianney. The first mayor, Oscar Poulin, was elected on October 20, 1926. Lac-au-Saumon () is a municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec, located in La Matapédia Regional Council Municipality in the Matapédia Valley. The municipality had a population of 1,488 as of the Canada 2021 Census. The village is located on the shores of the eponymous ''Lac au Saumon'' (French for "Salmon Lake") that is an enlargement of the Matapédia River. It was known as a spawning ground for salmon, but major pollution from mills made this a thing of the past. History The area opened up to colonization in 1863, and the Mission of Saint-Edmond-du-Lac-au-Saumon was founded in 1876.
