Karara, Western Australia
The Karara mine is a large iron mine located in the Mid West (Western Australia), Mid West region of Western Australia. Karara has estimated reserves of 2 billion tonnes of ore grading 35.5% iron metal. It is one of the few magnetite producers in Western Australia. It is owned by Ansteel Group (52.16%) and Gindalbie Metals (47.84%). The mine is operated by Karara Mining Limited. Timeline * In 2011, steelwork for the Karara project was delayed by major floods in Thailand. * In 2014, production was increased by over 35% in the June quarter, with more than 2 million tons of iron ore being shipped. Morawa, Western Australia
Morawa is a town in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It is located within the Shire of Morawa, approximately 370 kilometres (230 mi) north of the state capital Perth, on the railway line between Wongan Hills and Mullewa. History The name ''Morawa'' is an Indigenous Australian name; it probably derives from the ''Morowar'', the local dialect's word for the dalgite. The name was first used on maps of the area in 1910, in reference to a rock hole. Oakajee Port is a proposed deep water port to be built in the Mid West region of Western Australia, north of Geraldton, to service the region's growing iron ore industry. History Between 1879 and 1957, Oakagee was a siding and locality on the Northampton railway line. The site was first considered as a port and railway terminus in the 1980s. Opposition to the project from local residents centred on environmental concerns, especially in relation to nearby Coronation Beach.
