The City of Greater Geraldton is a local government area in the Mid West region of Western Australia, north of the state capital, Perth on the Indian Ocean. It covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Geraldton. It was established on 1st July 2011 following the amalgamation of the Shire of Mullewa and the City of Geraldton-Greenough, itself a product of a 2007 amalgamation between the City of Geraldton and Shire of Greenough. History A recommendation was made to the Minister for Local Government by the Local Government Advisory Board in August 2006 to amalgamate the Shire of Greenough with the City of Geraldton. Geraldton is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. Geraldton was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 colonial election. The district is based on the eponymous regional city. Labor held throughout most of the twentieth century, Geraldton has since become a seat that has changed hands regularly in the last two decades. Geography The district has always been based on the regional coastal city of Geraldton. Electoral reform ahead of the 2008 state election necessitated an increase in the district's enrolment and thus an expansion of its boundaries, as it did for all non-metropolitan districts. The Houtman Abrolhos (often called the Abrolhos Islands) is a chain of 122 islands and associated coral reefs in the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Australia about west of Geraldton, Western Australia. It is the southernmost true coral reef in the Indian Ocean, and one of the highest latitude reef systems in the world. The Mid West region is one of the nine regions of Western Australia. It is a sparsely populated region extending from the west coast of Western Australia, about north and south of its administrative centre of Geraldton and inland to east of Wiluna in the Gibson Desert. The Shire of Mullewa was a local government area in the Mid West region of Western Australia, about east of the city of Geraldton and about north of the state capital, Perth. The Shire covered an area of , and its seat of government was the town of Mullewa. It amalgamated with the City of Geraldton-Greenough on 1 July 2011 to become part of the City of Greater Geraldton. Mullewa, Western Australia
Mullewa is a town in the Mid West region of Western Australia, north of Perth and east-northeast of Geraldton. Mullewa is well known for its abundance of wildflowers in the spring and is one of the few places in Western Australia the wreath flower grows in. The surrounding areas produce wheat and other cereal crops. The town is a receival site for Cooperative Bulk Handling. History European settlers moved to the area in 1869 to take up pastoral leases for farming. In 1894, the government built a narrow gauge railway line from Geraldton to Mullewa and the town was gazetted in the same year. The town is named after Mullewa Spring, whose name is based on an Aboriginal name recorded by surveyor John Forrest in 1873. Walkaway is a small town in the City of Greater Geraldton local government area of Western Australia. At the , Walkaway had a population of 270. Its name is a corruption of , referring to the bend in the nearby Greenough River, and was originally given to the railway station when a line was built from Geraldton in 1887.
