Go Opening Theory
A Go opening is the initial stage of a game of Go (game), Go. On the traditional Go (board game), 19×19 board the opening phase of the game usually lasts between 15 and 40 Ply (game theory), plies. There is some specialised terminology for go openings. The precise meanings of Japanese language terms is often misunderstood. A go whole-board opening refers to an opening sequence of plays, almost always laid out the standard 19×19 go board. Because of the symmetry of the board (eight-fold), there are certain conventions about displaying opening moves traditional in Japan. These do not necessarily apply in China or Korea, but naturally in speaking of an 'opening' one never needs to distinguish openings related by symmetry. In two-or-more-player sequential games, a ply is one turn taken by one of the players. The word is used to clarify what is meant when one might otherwise say "turn". The word "turn" can be a problem since it means different things in different traditions. For example, in standard chess terminology, one ''move'' consists of a turn by each player; therefore a ply in chess is a ''half-move''. Thus, after 20 moves in a chess game, 40 plies have been completed—20 by white and 20 by black. Sakata Eio
was a 9- dan Japanese professional Go player. Biography Sakata became a professional Go player in 1935. His first title match was the Hon'inbō in 1951 when he challenged Hashimoto Utaro. More than usual was at stake in the match because Hashimoto played for the Kansai Ki-in, which Hashimoto had founded the year before. This put additional pressure on Sakata to win the title back for the Nihon Ki-in. Sakata started out well, winning three of the first four games, but Hashimoto fought back and won the final four games, and so kept the Hon'inbō title. Afterwards, Sakata went on to win a couple of small titles which were the start of a meteoric run of major wins in which he won almost all of the titles in Japan except the Hon'inbō.
