Emil Hartmann
Emil Hartmann (1 February 1836, Denmark – 18 July 1898, Copenhagen, Denmark) was a Danish composer of the romantic period, fourth generation of composers in the Danish Hartmann musical family. Early life and education Hartmann was born on 1 February 1836 in Copenhagen, the eldest son of composer Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann and of his composer wife Emma Hartmann. He grew up in the Zinn House in Copenhagen. Emil Hartmann got his first education from his father Johan Peter Emilius and brother-in-law Niels Gade. His piano teachers were Niels Ravnkilde (1823-1890) and Anton Rée (1820-1886). Letters from Hans Christian Andersen show that he was composing even before he could talk properly. August Bournonville
August Bournonville (21 August 1805 – 30 November 1879) was a Danish ballet master and choreographer. He was the son of Antoine Bournonville, a dancer and choreographer trained under the French choreographer, Jean Georges Noverre, and the nephew of Julie Alix de la Fay, née Bournonville, of the Royal Swedish Ballet. Bournonville was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, where his father had settled. He trained with his father Antoine Bournonville as well he studied under the Italian choreographer Vincenzo Galeotti at the Royal Danish Ballet, Copenhagen, and in Paris, France, under French dancer Auguste Vestris. He initiated a unique style in ballet known as the Bournonville School. Following studies in Paris as a young man, Bournonville became solo dancer at the Royal Ballet in Copenhagen. Bodil Neergaard
Ellen Bodil Neergaard née Hartmann (10 February 1867 – 18 May 1959) was a Danish philanthropist and patron of the arts. She is remembered for her many philanthropic activities as well as for her life in Fuglsang Manor on the island of Lolland where, together with her husband Rolf Viggo de Neergaard, she hosted every Summer prominent artists and musicians. Carl Nielsen's ''At the Bier of a Young Artist'' (''Ved en ung Kunstners Baare'') for string orchestra, FS 58, was written for the funeral of the Danish painter Oluf Hartmann in January 1910. Background Oluf Hartmann was the son of composer Emil Hartmann and the brother of Bodil Neergaard, the lady of Fuglsang Manor, a gathering place for musicians and artists on the Danish island of Lolland. Hartmann died on Sunday, 16 January 1910. By the following Wednesday, Nielsen had completed the draft of his "Andante lamentoso". Carl Nielsen
Carl August Nielsen (; 9 June 1865 – 3 October 1931) was a Danish composer, conductor and violinist, widely recognized as his country's most prominent composer. Brought up by poor yet musically talented parents on the island of Funen, he demonstrated his musical abilities at an early age. He initially played in a military band before attending the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen from 1884 until December 1886. He premiered his Op. 1, '' Suite for Strings'', in 1888, at the age of 23. The following year, Nielsen began a 16-year stint as a second violinist in the Royal Danish Orchestra under the conductor Johan Svendsen, during which he played in Giuseppe Verdi's '' Falstaff'' and ''Otello'' at their Danish premieres. Oluf Hartmann
Oluf Hartmann (16 February 1879 – 16 January 1910) was a Danish painter. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, he showed his works at important exhibitions in the 1900s. Career Hartmann was born in the house Carlsminde in Søllerød, Denmark, the son of composer Emil Hartmann and grandson of composer Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann. He grew up in a family where there was great interest in music, art, literature, and travel. Carlsminde
Carlsminde is a Baroque-style mansion located at Søllerødvej 30 in Søllerød, Rudersdal Municipality, some 20 kilometres north of central Copenhagen, Denmark. The building was listed on the Danish registry of protected buildings and places in 1918. The political party Venstre has been based in the building since 1971 and is currently for sale. History 18th century Carlsminde originates in an old tenant farm. Court physician and ''kancelliråd'' Johan Peter Homuth constructed a small country house on the land in 1751 and later expanded the estate with more land twice. The Church of Our Lady ( da, Vor Frue Kirke) is the cathedral of Copenhagen. It is situated on the Frue Plads public square in central Copenhagen, next to the historic main building of the University of Copenhagen. Bolette Cathrine Frederikke Puggaard née Hage (1798–1847) was a landscape painter of the Danish Golden Age, one of very few 19th-century Danish women whose art extended beyond flower paintings. She and her husband, the merchant and shipowner Hans Puggaard, are remembered for their philanthropic activities as well as supporting many of the painters of the Danish Golden Age. Hans Puggaard (3 September 1788 - 8 April 1866) was a Danish merchant and shipowner who founded H. Puggaard & Co. in 1813. The company became a leading wholesaler of grain and was also active in the market for import of goods such as coffee and especially sugar. Puggaard was also an important philanthropist dedicating much of his fortune to social causes. Puggaard's wife, Bolette Puggaard née Hage, a daughter of Christopher Friedenreich Hage, was a painter. Rudolph Puggaard
Rudolph Puggaard (7 January 1818 – 9 December 1885) was a Danish merchant, patron of the arts and philanthropist. Early life and education Puggaard was born into a family of merchants on 7 January 1818 in Copenhagen. His father, Hans Puggaard had founded H. Puggaard & Co. in 1813. His mother, Bolette Puggaard, née Hage, a painter, was the daughter of Christopher Friedrich Hage, a wealthy merchant from Stege on Møn. Carl Hartmann (sculptor)
Carl Christian Ernst Hartmann (13 September 1837 – 6 September 1901) was a Danish sculptor who worked with antique motifs in the Thorvaldsen tradition. The son of composer Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann and his composer wife Emma Hartmann, née Zinn, Hartmann was born in Copenhagen. After training with August Saabye and Herman Wilhelm Bissen, he attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1855, receiving the silver medal in 1859. He worked mainly with bronze rather than the more common marble. While in Rome in 1863, he created a colossal statue of ''Alexandros''. In the 1870s, he joined the Johannes Group in connection with Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen. For a time, he was cultural correspondent for ''Nationaltidende''.
