Carl Hartmann (sculptor)
Carl Christian Ernst Hartmann (13 September 1837 – 6 September 1901) was a Danish sculptor who worked with antique motifs in the Thorvaldsen tradition. The son of composer Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann and his composer wife Emma Hartmann, née Zinn, Hartmann was born in Copenhagen. After training with August Saabye and Herman Wilhelm Bissen, he attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1855, receiving the silver medal in 1859. He worked mainly with bronze rather than the more common marble. While in Rome in 1863, he created a colossal statue of ''Alexandros''. In the 1870s, he joined the Johannes Group in connection with Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen. For a time, he was cultural correspondent for ''Nationaltidende''. Being highly musical, he also occasionally composed. Emma Hartmann
Amalia Emma Sophie Hartmann née Zinn (22 August 1807 – 6 March 1851) was a Danish people, Danish composer who composed under the pseudonym Frederik H. Palmer. She was married to the composer Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann (1805–1900). They lived on the second floor in the Kvæsthusgade 3, Zinn House at Kvæsthusgade 3 in Copenhagen. Early life Emma Zinn was born into a wealthy merchant family in Copenhagen. She was the daughter of Johann Friederich Zinn (1779–1838) and Eva Sophie Juliane Oldeland (1779–1812). Her father had inherited the family's trading house after the death of his own father Johann Ludvig Zinn in 1802, initially in a partnership with his brother Carl Ludvig Zinn who died in 1808. Emma grew up in the Zinn House at Kvæsthusgade 3 and studied singing and piano with composer Andreas Peter Berggreen (1801–1880). Edvard Grieg
Edvard Hagerup Grieg ( , ; 15 June 18434 September 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the foremost Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. His use of Norwegian folk music in his own compositions brought the music of Norway to fame, as well as helping to develop a national identity, much as Jean Sibelius did in Finland and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. History and profile ''Nationaltidende'' was established by Jean Christian Ferslew in March 1876. It was started as an evening newspaper to supplement ''Dags-Telegrafen'', also published by Ferslew, by September the same year the paper was published twice daily (morning and evening) as a high-quality newspaper for the bourgeoisie and the civil service. Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann (14 May 1805 – 10 March 1900) was, together with his son-in-law Niels W. Gade, the leading Danish composer of the 19th century. According to Alfred Einstein, he was ″the real founder of the Romantic movement in Denmark and even in all Scandinavia″. J.P.E. The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts ( da, Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi - Billedkunst Skolerne) has provided education in the arts for more than 250 years, playing its part in the development of the art of Denmark. History The Royal Danish Academy of Portraiture, Sculpture, and Architecture in Copenhagen was inaugurated on 31 March 1754, and given as a gift to the King Frederik V on his 31st birthday. Its name was changed to the Royal Danish Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in 1771. At the same event, Johann Friedrich Struensee introduced a new scheme in the academy to encourage artisan apprentices to take supplementary classes in drawing so as to develop the notion of "good taste". Herman Wilhelm Bissen
Herman Wilhelm Bissen (13 October 1798 – 10 March 1868) was a Denmark, Danish sculptor. Biography Bissen was born at Schleswig in the Duchy of Schleswig. He was the son of Christian Gottlieb Wilhelm Bissen (1766-1847), a farmer, and Anna Margrethe Dorothea Elfendal (1763-1848). He was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1816 to 1823. In 1824, he was awarded a travel scholarship which enabled him to travel to Rome. The stay in Rome extended over 10 years during which time he became an assistant to Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. Under the influence of Thorvaldsen, his style changed from romanticism to neo-classicism. In early 1834, Bissen left Rome to return to Copenhagen where he was awarded a professorship at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts following the death of his predecessor, Hermann Ernst Freund.
