Börje is the form that has developed naturally according to the sound change laws of Swedish, whilst Birger is a literary form that has been common since the nineteenth century, when archaic forms of names became fashionable. Etymology The etymology of Börje is uncertain. Probably it is a short form of names beginning with ''Berg-''. Less likely it means "helper", from the verb ''bärga''. It has also been suggested that it is derived from the name element ''-ger'' (spear). Börje Salming
Anders Börje Salming ( ; 17 April 1951 – 24 November 2022) was a Swedish ice hockey player. He was a defenceman who played professionally for 23 seasons, for the clubs Brynäs IF, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, and AIK Hockey, AIK. He spent 16 seasons with the Maple Leafs, who retired his number 21 in 2016. Salming holds several Maple Leafs records, including the most assist (ice hockey), assists. Oscar Börje Leander (7 March 1918 – 30 October 2003) was a Swedish footballer. He played 249 matches as a midfielder for AIK and scored 25 goals, mostly successful penalty kicks. He also played 23 times for the Sweden national team, scoring four goals. He was on the Sweden squad that won the gold medal in the 1948 Summer Olympics. Börje Haraldsson is a Swedish Physician-scientist known for his work on kidney disease. He is the Chief Executive Officer at Oncorena AB, and a Professor of Physiology in Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. Börje Jansson (born 10 November 1942) is a former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer from Sweden. His best years were in 1971 and 1972, when he finished third in the 125cc world championship riding for the Maico factory racing team. Börje Fredriksson (June 30, 1937 – September 21, 1968) was a Swedish jazz tenor saxophonist. Fredriksson was born in Eskilstuna, Sweden. He played at the beginning of the 1960s in a quartet with Bobo Stenson (piano), Palle Danielsson (bass) and Fredrik Norén (drums), as well as in groups with Eje Thelin and Bernt Rosengren. He played with the guitarist Rune Gustafsson in 1961 and with Bosse Broberg's quartet in 1962 at the Golden Circle Jazz Club in Stockholm. He recorded ''Intervall'', (Columbia 1966), together with the posthumous, self-titled ''Börje Fredriksson'', (EMI/Odeon, 1969). In 1968, he killed himself. Fredriksson's sheet music was left in the hands of Bobo Stenson, and in 1994 he, Danielsson and Norén with saxophonist Joakim Milder, recorded an album of Fredriksson's music entitled ''Sister Maj's Blouse''.
