Biff (Unix)
is a mail notification system for Unix. Usage When a new mail message is delivered, the program alerts the recipient so they can read it immediately. The alert is sent to the tty where the recipient is logged in, and contains the ''Subject'', ''From'' line, and first few lines of the body of the new message. The alert also includes terminal beeps to guarantee quick attention. Notification is enabled by the command : and disabled by : Comsat The biff utility was the user interface used to change notification preferences. User Datagram Protocol
In computer networking, the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is one of the core communication protocols of the Internet protocol suite used to send messages (transported as datagrams in Network packet, packets) to other hosts on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. Within the Internet email system, a message transfer agent (MTA), mail transfer agent, or mail relay is software that transfers electronic mail messages from one computer to another using the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. The Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD), also known as Berkeley Unix or BSD Unix, is a discontinued Unix operating system developed and distributed by the Computer Systems Research Group (CSRG) at the University of California, Berkeley, beginning in 1978.
