2024–25 Pittsburgh Penguins Season
The 2024–25 Pittsburgh Penguins season was the 58th season (57th season of play) for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise that was established on June 5, 1967. On April 6, 2025, the Penguins were eliminated from playoff contention for the third consecutive season following a loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. This was the Penguins first season finishing with a losing record since the 2005–06 season. The 2024–25 season also saw the deaths of two beloved former members of the Penguins organization, longtime Hall of Fame broadcaster Mike Lange on February 19, 2025, and former general manager Ray Shero nearly two months later on April 9. Metropolitan Division (NHL)
The National Hockey League's Metropolitan Division (often referred to simply as the "Metro Division") was formed in 2013 as one of the two divisions in the Eastern Conference (NHL), Eastern Conference as part of a league realignment. It is also a successor of the original Atlantic Division (NHL, 1993–2013), Atlantic Division and one of the two successors to the Southeast Division (NHL), Southeast Division. The Pittsburgh Penguins are a professional ice hockey team based in Pittsburgh. The franchise was established as one of six new teams in the 1967 NHL expansion and is a member of the Eastern Conference's Metropolitan Division. The Penguins played their home games at Mellon Arena from the team's inception until 2010, when they moved into the PPG Paints Arena. The 2024–25 Detroit Red Wings season was the 99th season for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise that was established on September 25, 1926. It was the Red Wings' eighth season at Little Caesars Arena. This was the Red Wings' third season under head coach Derek Lalonde, until he was fired and replaced by Todd McLellan on December 26, 2024. The Red Wings were eliminated from playoff contention for the ninth consecutive season on April 12, 2025, after the Montreal Canadiens lost in overtime to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 2024–25 Buffalo Sabres season was the 55th season of play for the Sabres in the National Hockey League (NHL). It was the team's first season with Lindy Ruff back as head coach since 2012-13 Buffalo Sabres season, 2013. David Quinn (ice Hockey)
David Quinn (born July 30, 1966) is an American professional ice hockey coach and former player. He is an assistant coach for the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the head coach of the United States men's national team. He was previously the head coach of the Rangers and San Jose Sharks of the NHL, the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League (AHL), assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL, and head coach at Boston University. Ray Shero
Rejean "Ray" Shero (July 28, 1962 – April 9, 2025) was an American ice hockey executive in the National Hockey League (NHL) who served as the general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins and New Jersey Devils franchises from 2006 to 2020. Shero played ice hockey at the collegiate level for the St. Lawrence Saints. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982, but never played in the NHL. Shero was an assistant general manager for the Ottawa Senators from 1993 to 1998 and then for the Nashville Predators from 1998 to 2006. Mike Lange
Mike Lange (March 3, 1948 – February 19, 2025) was an American sportscaster best known for his 46-year career as a play-by-play announcer for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). Lange served as the team's play-by-play announcer in 1974 and again from 1976 to 2021. In 2001, he received the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his outstanding work as an NHL broadcaster. Career In 1969, while attending Sacramento State University, Lange was encouraged by his friend to attend a hockey game. At the time, Lange had never attended a hockey game before.
