1971–72 New York Knicks Season
The 1971–72 New York Knicks season was the 26th season for the team in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Knicks compiled a 48–34 record in the regular season to finish second in the Atlantic Division and earn a berth in the NBA Playoffs for the sixth consecutive year. New York had acquired Earl Monroe in a trade with the Baltimore Bullets in November 1971. In the first round of the playoffs, New York faced the Baltimore Bullets, who had defeated the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals the previous year. The Knicks won the series in six games and advanced to the conference finals, where they faced the Boston Celtics. With a 4–1 series victory, New York made the NBA Finals for the second time in three seasons. In the Finals, the Knicks were opposed by the Los Angeles Lakers, whom they had beaten in the 1970 NBA Finals. Red Holzman
William "Red" Holzman (August 10, 1920 – November 13, 1998) was an American professional basketball player and coach. He is best known as the head coach of the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1967 to 1977, and again from 1978 to 1982. Holzman helped lead the Knicks to two NBA championships in 1970 and 1973, and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1986. In 1996, Holzman was named one of the Top 10 Coaches in NBA History. The 1971–72 Cleveland Cavaliers season was the second season of NBA basketball in Cleveland, Ohio. 1971–72 Cincinnati Royals Season
The 1971–72 season would be the Royals final season in Cincinnati. The franchise continued to struggle and missed the playoffs for the 5th year in a row. The Royals finished the season with a record of 30 wins and 52 losses. Prior to the season, the Royals were sold to a group of 10 businessmen from Kansas City. The new ownership group paid $5 million for the franchise and a decision was reached to move the team after the season. The franchise would relocate west where they would be reborn as the Kansas City-Omaha Kings. 1971–72 Baltimore Bullets Season
The 1971–72 Baltimore Bullets season was their 11th season in the NBA and ninth season in the city of Baltimore. The Bullets would stun their fans and the entire league by trading Earl Monroe. The trade was done three games into the season and Monroe was sent to the rival New York Knicks. The Bullets received Dave Stallworth, Mike Riordan, and cash. The Bullets did not adjust well to not having Monroe as they finished the season with a 38–44 record. The losing record would still be good enough to win the Central Division. In the playoffs, the Bullets would face Monroe and the New York Knicks and be beaten by the Knicks in six games. Notably, the team had rebranded their uniforms in the offseason that saw a curving line (blue-orange-blue for the white jersey, white-blue-white for the orange jersey) with a number on the player's right shoulder while the "Bullets" wordmark was placed on the shorts. Tuskegee University (Tuskegee or TU; formerly known as the Tuskegee Institute) is a private, historically black land-grant university in Tuskegee, Alabama, United States. Kenny Mayfield
Kendall Mayfield (born May 11, 1948) is an American former professional basketball player who played for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Career Mayfield was drafted in the 3rd round (50th overall) of the 1971 NBA draft by the New York Knicks. He signed with the team in June but was cut in October before the season. He rejoined the Knicks during the 1972 offseason but was again cut before the season. He was again cut from the Knicks' preseason roster in October 1974. In between his short stints with the Knicks, he mostly played in the Eastern Basketball Association (EBA) for teams like the Allentown Jets. He was selected to the All-EBA First Team in 1974 and Second Team in 1973. He also had a stint in the European Professional Basketball League for the Belgium Lions in early 1975. Gregg Northington
Greggory D. "Poncho" Northington ( 1948 – February 11, 2017) was an American professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the Murray State College Aggies, Paul Quinn Tigers and Alabama State Hornets. Northington was selected in the 1971 NBA draft by the New York Knicks and the 1972 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers but did not play in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
