1971–72 Baltimore Bullets Season
The 1971–72 Baltimore Bullets season was their 11th season in the NBA and ninth season in the city of Baltimore. The Bullets would stun their fans and the entire league by trading Earl Monroe. The trade was done three games into the season and Monroe was sent to the rival New York Knicks. The Bullets received Dave Stallworth, Mike Riordan, and cash. The Bullets did not adjust well to not having Monroe as they finished the season with a 38–44 record. The losing record would still be good enough to win the Central Division. In the playoffs, the Bullets would face Monroe and the New York Knicks and be beaten by the Knicks in six games. Notably, the team had rebranded their uniforms in the offseason that saw a curving line (blue-orange-blue for the white jersey, white-blue-white for the orange jersey) with a number on the player's right shoulder while the "Bullets" wordmark was placed on the shorts. Gene Shue
Eugene William Shue (December 18, 1931 – April 3, 2022) was an American professional basketball player and coach in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Shue was one of the top guards of the early days of the NBA and an influential figure in the development of basketball. He is credited with having invented the "spin move" while being an early harbinger of other plays and strategies. Shue was an NBA All-Star in five consecutive times from 1958 to 1962. After his successful playing career, he became a long-serving coach for three franchises. With his first tenure with the Baltimore Bullets, Shue coached the team for seven seasons and won four division championships with five playoff berths, with one trip to the NBA Finals in 1971. The Milwaukee Bucks are an American professional basketball team based in Milwaukee. The Golden State Warriors are an American professional basketball team based in San Francisco. Jack Marin
John Warren Marin ( ; born October 12, 1944) is an American former professional basketball player. A 6 ft 7 in (2.01 m) small forward from Duke University, Marin was named to the 1967 NBA All-Rookie Team and spent 11 seasons in the National Basketball Association (1966–1977), playing for the Baltimore Bullets, Houston Rockets, Buffalo Braves and Chicago Bulls. The left-handed Marin was a two-time All-Star and scored 12,541 points in his career. He led the NBA in free throw percentage during the 1971–72 NBA season. 1971–72 Seattle SuperSonics Season
The 1971–72 Seattle SuperSonics season was the 5th season of the Seattle SuperSonics in the National Basketball Association (NBA). In their third season with Lenny Wilkens as head coach, the Sonics finished the regular season in sixth place in the Western Conference with a 47–35 record, their first winning record in franchise history. Wilkens quit as head coach at the end of the season and was replaced by former Dallas Chaparrals coach Tom Nissalke. 1971–72 Portland Trail Blazers Season
The 1971–72 Portland Trail Blazers season was the second season of the Portland Trail Blazers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Geoff Petrie missed 22 games due to injury. Petrie who averaged 24.8 points per game in his rookie season would drop nearly 6 points per game as the Blazers finished with an NBA worst record of 18–64. One of the highlights of the season was Sidney Wicks. He would win the Rookie of the Year with a team best 24.5 points per game. Before the start of the season, Blazers guard Rick Adelman was named captain, making him the first in franchise history. Portland head coach Rolland Todd was fired on February 2, 1972, and replaced by Stu Inman, the Blazers director of player personnel.
