"Şən Azərbaycan" (Azerbaijani alphabet, Azerbaijani Cyrillic: "Шән Азәрбајҹан", ) is a Soviet-era patriotic song about Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Azerbaijan that still remains popular in Azerbaijan, modern Azerbaijan. It was written in 1970 and was sung by Polad Bülbüloğlu, Polad Bulbuloghlu, Muslim Magomayev (musician), Muslim Magomayev, Shovkat Alakbarova, and , among others. During the Soviet era, the song was often sung in both Azerbaijani language, Azerbaijani and Russian. After the Dissolution of the Soviet Union, collapse of the USSR, the Russian lyrics fell out of popularity and are typically no longer sung. Shirvan Steppe
The Shirvan steppe () is part of the Kura-Aras Lowland of Azerbaijan and is located on the left bank of the Kura River. The elevation of the steppe ranges between and . The steppe has grey desert soil. Its vegetation is halophytic and wormwood, with estuary meadows. The Upper Shirvan water channel was directed from the Mingachevir Reservoir in order to irrigate the land. Animal husbandry (in winter pastures) and horticulture (cotton, crops, and grape) are the main agriculture in the steppe. The languages of the Soviet Union consist of hundreds of different languages and dialects from several different language groups. In 1922, it was decreed that all nationalities in the Soviet Union had the right to Korenizatsiya, education in their own language. Kura (Caspian Sea)
The Kura, also known in Georgian as Mtkvari ( ), is an east-flowing transboundary river south of the Greater Caucasus Mountains which drains the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus east into the Caspian Sea. It also drains the north side of the Lesser Caucasus, while its main tributary, the Aras, drains the south side of those mountains. Göygöl (lake)
Göygöl () is a natural lake in Azerbaijan. It is situated at the footsteps of Murovdag, not far from Ganja in the Goygol District. The lake is 0.78 km² and is 1553.3 metres above sea level. Its length from south to north is 2800 metres, and its maximum width is 800 metres. History Due to an earthquake which hit the area on 25 September 1139, parts of the Kapaz Mount collapsed and blocked the path of the Kürəkçay River. As a result of diversion of water flow, a lake with pure mountain water was created. Hence, the name given, signifying the pureness of the water. The nearby city of Khanlar was renamed after the Göygöl Lake on 25 April 2008. The city was founded as Helenendorf by the first German settlers in Azerbaijan in 1819 and with a considerable German minority until 1941 had been renamed to Khanlar in 1938. Polad Bülbüloğlu
Polad Bulbuloghlu (; born February 4, 1945) is a Soviet and Azerbaijani singer, actor, politician, and diplomat. Bulbuloghlu became famous in the Soviet Union with composing jazz-influenced songs with heavy Azerbaijani folk influences in Azerbaijani and Russian languages. He also sang his own songs. Three of his songs became Songs of the Year and he received numerous prestigious awards in the Soviet Union. Bulbuloghlu is a lyrical tenor. In the late 1990s, despite having a huge success with a new version arranged by Paul Buckmaster of his old song ''Gəl Ey Səhər'' (''Come, Hey Morning!'') in Turkey and sold-out concerts in Russia, Bulbuloghlu started a political career.
