It is maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation and is free and open, unrestricted by software patents. Its name is derived from "ogging", jargon from the computer game ''Netrek''. Lossless compression is a class of data compression that allows the original data to be perfectly reconstructed from the compressed data with no loss of information.
