History


Empire of Japan

Miaoli Hsien was at first eliminated under Japanese rule. was established in 1901. It was then divided over and in 1909. From 1920 to 1945, , and six villages were under the jurisdiction of , under Shinchiku Prefecture.


Republic of China

On 16 August 1950, Miaoli City (then Miaoli Township) was designed as the
county seat A county seat is an administrative center, seat of government, or capital city of a county or civil parish. The term is in use in Canada, China, Hungary, Romania, Taiwan, and the United States. The equivalent term shire town is used in the US st ...
of the newly established Miaoli County. On 25 December 1981, Miaoli Township was upgraded from urban township to a

as Miaoli City.
