Gongweixu Tunnel
Miaoli Tunnel, commonly known as Gongweixu Tunnel, is a former railway tunnel in Miaoli City, Miaoli County, Taiwan. In 2003, the tunnel was converted into a pedestrian walkway as part of Maolishan Park and is a popular tourist attraction. Etymology The official name of the tunnel used by the Taiwan Railway Administration is Miaoli Tunnel ( zh, t=苗栗隧道, p=Miáolì Suìdào). However, the tunnel is more commonly known as "Gongweixu Tunnel" ( zh, t=功維敘隧道, p=Gōngwéixù Suìdào) or simply "Gongweixu". When the tunnel was completed in 1903, then Governor General of Taiwan Kodama Gentarō visited the site and wrote the characters "Gongweixu" on the plaque above the north entrance, hence the alternative name. The source of "Gongweixu" is thought to be the "Counsels of Great Yu" chapter of the ''Book of Documents''. Taichung Line
The Taichung line (), also known as the Mountain line (), is a line of the Taiwan Railway Administration, which one of two parallel lines in Central Taiwan section offsetting to inland mountain area. It has a total length of 85.5 km, all of which is double track, passing Downtown Taichung. History The Taichung Line was completed in 1908. After the Coast Line between Zhunan and Changhua was finished in 1922, the original line was called Taichung Line. In 1998, the construction to expand to two tracks ( double tracks) was completed. Long tunnels were built to reduce the grade of the line. Sanyi Tunnel is one of the longest railway tunnels in Taiwan. 1935 Shinchiku-Taichū Earthquake
The 1935 Shinchiku-Taichū earthquake occurred with a Richter magnitude of 7.1 (7.0 Mw) in April 1935 with its epicenter in Taichung, Taiwan (then Shinchiku Prefecture). It was the deadliest earthquake in Taiwan's recorded history, claiming 3,276 lives and causing extensive damage. Twelve seconds after the mainshock, an aftershock of 6.0 occurred, centered on ''Gabi Village'' (present-day Emei Township, Hsinchu County). Earthquake The initial shock happened at 06:02 local time on 21 April 1935. The epicentre was in the village of , Byōritsu District, Shinchiku Prefecture (modern-day Sanyi, Miaoli), with the quake measuring 7.1 on the Richter magnitude scale. ''United Daily News'' (UDN; ) is a newspaper published in Taiwan. It is considered to support the pan-Blue Coalition in its editorials. History UDN was founded in 1951 by Wang Tiwu as a merger of three newspapers, ''Popular Daily'' (全民日報), ''National'' (民族報), and the ''Economic Times'' (經濟時報). The three newspapers formally merged in 1953. In terms of political orientation, the ''United Daily News'' is regarded as taking an editorial line that supports the pan-Blue Coalition. The ''Liberty Times'' is a national newspaper published in Taiwan. Founded by Lin Rong-San, it is published by the Liberty Times Group, which also publishes ''Taipei Times'', an English language newspaper . The newspaper was first published on 17 April 1980, as Liberty Daily, before adopting its current name in 1987. The EMD G12 is a class of export locomotive built by GM-EMD, and its Canadian affiliate General Motors Diesel. In addition, Australian licensee Clyde Engineering built ten locomotives for New Zealand in 1957, five for Hong Kong, 23 for Queensland, fourteen for Western Australia and seven for BHP. Australian licensee Commonwealth Engineering also built 42 for Queensland Rail in 1964–66. Many examples were built in the 1950-1960s for railroads around the world. A double-track railway usually involves running one track in each direction, compared to a single-track railway where trains in both directions share the same track.
