Bugsuk
Bugsuk is an island barangay in the Balabac municipality of Palawan province in the Philippines. Its area is . History Eight crew members of the USS ''Flier'' reached Bugsuk Island after their submarine struck a mine on August 13, 1944, while on surface patrol during World War II. The survivors, who had been on deck and in the conning tower when the explosion occurred, swam 18 hours to reach an atoll near Bugsuk. Over the next three days, they swam to two other islands before landing on Bugsuk and being helped by Filipino guerrillas, led by Nazario B. Mayor. Balabac, Palawan
Balabac, officially the Municipality of Balabac ( tgl, Bayan ng Balabac), is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Palawan, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 42,527 people. The municipality consists of some 36 islands, including the eponymous Balabac Island. The islands are notable for their uncommon indigenous plant and animal species, such as the nocturnal Philippine mouse-deer (or Pilandok). The islands are also home to dugongs, saltwater crocodiles, sawfishes, and sea turtles. Due to its biodiversity, the terrestrial and marine ecosystems of the Balabac archipelago are currently being pushed by scholars to be included in the tentative list of the Philippines for a possible UNESCO World Heritage Site nomination in the future. Balabac Strait
The Balabac Strait ( fil, Kipot ng Balabak; ms, Selat Balabak) is one of the straits that connects the South China Sea with the Sulu Sea. It separates Balabac Island (Palawan province), Philippines, from Balambangan and the Banggi Islands north of Borneo that are a part of Malaysia's Sabah state. The strait is about wide with a maximum depth of around . It was therefore likely to have been below sea level before the last ice age, which could have permitted an exchange of flora and fauna between Borneo and the Palawans, such as the tiger. Mimaropa (usually capitalized in official government documents), formally known as the Southwestern Tagalog Region, is an Regions of the Philippines, administrative region in the Philippines. It was also formerly but still colloquially designated as Region IV-B until 2016. It is one of two regions in the country having no land border with another region (the other being Eastern Visayas). USS Flier (SS-250)
USS ''Flier'' (SS-250) was a ''Gato''-class submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the flier. Construction and commissioning ''Flier''′s keel was laid down 30 October 1942 by Electric Boat Company of Groton, Connecticut. She was launched on 11 July 1943, sponsored by Mrs. A. S. Pierce), and commissioned on 18 October 1943. First war patrol ''Flier'' reached Pearl Harbor from New London, Connecticut, on 20 December 1943, and prepared for her first war patrol, sailing 12 January 1944.
