Avis Car Rental is an American car rental company headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey. Avis, Budget Rent a Car, Budget Truck Rental and Zipcar are all units of Avis Budget Group. Avis Budget Group operates the Avis brand in South Africa, North America, South America, India, Australia, and New Zealand. In 2011, Avis announced it was acquiring Avis Europe plc, which had been a separate corporation licensing the Avis brand. Since the late 1970s, Avis has featured mainly General Motors (GM) vehicles such as Chevrolet and Cadillac, but today also rents popular non-GM brands including Ford and Toyota. Amoskeag Company
The Amoskeag Company was a privately owned American holding and operating company. It was calved off from the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company (AMC) of New Hampshire in 1925, which went bankrupt a decade later. Through its subsidiary the Pillowtex Corporation it was the last owner of the Fieldcrest Mills in North Carolina. When AMC profits declined in the mid-1920s, the Amoskeag Company was created as a shelter in order to transfer all of the profits from the manufacturing company's booming years clear both of that firm's operational needs and possible business failure. When AMC declared bankruptcy in 1936 that money was untouchable, allowing the holding company to continue unaffected. Robert Townsend (author)
Robert Chase Townsend (July 30, 1920 – January 12, 1998) was an American business executive and author who is noted for transforming Avis into a rental car giant. Biography Townsend was born in Washington, D.C. in 1920. His parents moved to Great Neck, New York where he spent his childhood. After high school, he was accepted to Princeton, graduating in 1942. After graduating from college, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy, serving for the remainder of World War II. After the war, he was hired by American Express in 1948. By the time he left the company, he was the senior vice president for investment and international banking. In 1962, Lazard Frères bought Avis, a struggling auto rental company that had never made a profit in its existence. Willow Run Airport is an airport in Van Buren Charter Township and Ypsilanti Township, near Ypsilanti, Michigan, United States that serves freight, corporate, and general aviation.
