, a battle took place outside the town in which a combined French and Irish force defeated British troops from the Sligo garrison. Known as the

who was involved in the battle. In the 18th century, a bleach mill was built locally by Charles O'Hara in an effort to increase industry in the Sligo area. O'Hara brought in weavers and bleachers from the north to settle in the Collooney area. The mill finally closed in 1956. The mill was also used at certain times in its history for the production of carbide, a mixture of coal, coke and lime.
