Estonia

Ãœlo Pikkov
Ülo Pikkov (born 15 June 1976 in Tallinn) is an Estonian animator, film director and producer. In 1998 he graduated from Turku School of Art and Media. In 2005 he graduated from University of Tartu in law. In 2011 he began his doctoral studies at the Estonian Academy of Arts. He defended his doctorate in 2018 with his work "Anti-Animation, the Peculiarities of Eastern European Animated Film". Between 2007 and 2011, Pikkov was the chairman of the audiovisual arts endowment of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. Until 2016, he was an associate professor in the animation department of the Estonian Academy of Arts. He has written and illustrated books, as well as published caricatures, editorial cartoons and illustrations in the press. Since 2006 he has worked in film production company Silmviburlane. Ãœlo Voitka
Brothers Voitka are Ülo Voitka (born 7 October 1968) and Aivar Voitka (born 17 March 1967). They were Estonian Forest Brothers 1986–2000. 27 March 1986 the brothers became forest brothers, when they fled with Aavo Voitka and Aivar Votika from soviet recruitment. Aavo Voitka and Aivar Voitka were eventually caught and punished, but Ülo and Aivar managed to continue their hiding till the year 2000, 9 years after the Estonian restoration of Independence. They were spotted and reported to the authorities by a local who saw them. When the police surrounded the brothers, the brothers opened fire in the direction of police, but did not hit anyone. K-kommando was brought, and through negotiation, the brothers surrendered. The punishment of brothers was controversial. They are arguably the last forest brothers. Ãœlo Vinter
Ülo Vinter (3 January 1934 in Tallinn – 2 July 2000 in Käsmu) was an Estonian composer. In 1951 he graduated from Tallinn Music High School in music theory. Afterwards he graduated from Tallinn State Conservatory in composition speciality. From 1956 to 1969 he was the music editor at Estonian Radio and from 1969 to 1986 at Eesti Telefilm. Ülo Vilimaa (13 March 1941 – 27 September 2021) was an Estonian dancer, choreographer, theatre director, and painter. From 1962 until 1974, he was ballet soloist and ballet master at the , and from 1974 until 1997 principal ballet master. From 1997 until 2002, he was a director at the Vanemuine theatre. Ülo Uluots (4 February 1930 Jõhvi – 18 July 1997 Tallinn) was an Estonian politician, mining engineer and military historian. From April 1992 until October 1992, Uluots was the first Estonian Minister of Defence since Estonia's regaining independence. His father, Oskar Uluots, was an officer of the Republic of Estonia and brother of Prime Minister of Estonia Jüri Uluots. Ãœlo Tuulik (born 22 February 1940, in Abruka Island, Saare County) is an Estonian writer. Ãœlo Torpats
Ülo Torpats (15 November 1920, in Tartu – 20 January 1988, in Tartu) was an Estonian philologist and translator. Torpats graduated from Hugo Treffner Gymnasium in 1940. In 1951, he graduated from Tartu State University with a degree in classical philology. From 1951 to 1953, he worked at the Estonian Academy of Agriculture. From 1955 to 1956 and again from 1960, he was a lecturer at the Department of Western European Literature and Classical Philology of the University of Tartu. Ülo Tootsen (13 June 1933 – 12 March 2006) was an Estonian biologist, journalist, publisher, editor, translator, and politician. He was a member of IX Riigikogu, representing the Estonian Centre Party. Tootsen was born in Varstu Parish (now, part of Rõuge Parish). His brother was journalist, writer and politician Toivo Tootsen. He graduated from Tartu State University in 1957 with a degree in zoology. He then worked in the Ministry of Agriculture of the Estonian SSR in from 1957 until 1959 as a chief ichthyologist. Ãœlo Sooster
Ãœlo Ilmar Sooster (October 17, 1924 in Ãœhtri, Käina Parish – October 25, 1970 in Moscow) was an Estonian nonconformist painter. Ãœlo Sooster was born the village of Ãœhtri on the Estonian island of Hiiumaa. He was the son of Johannes Sooster and Veera Sooster (''née'' Tatter) and had a sister, Meedi, two years younger. His father was later remarried to Linda Vahtras. He was educated at Tartu Art College where he studied surrealism during the years 1945–1949. In 1949, his studies were cut short when he was arrested and, like hundreds of thousands of other Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians, he was arrested and deported by the Soviet authorities to Gulag. Sooster was sentenced to ten years of hard labour in a Karaganda camp. In 1956, during the Khrushchev Thaw, he was released and 'rehabilitated' by denouncing Stalinism.
