Rivière Des Prairies
The Rivière des Prairies (; ), called the Back River in English, is a delta channel of the Ottawa River in southwestern Quebec, Canada. The Kanien'kehá:ka called it ''Skowanoti'', meaning "River behind the island". The river separates the cities of Laval and Montreal. Geography Flowing west to east, the Rivière des Prairies bisects the Hochelaga Archipelago and originates in the Lake of Two Mountains. It flows on either side of Île Bizard (part of Montreal), then divides the Island of Montreal (Montreal) to the south from Île Jésus (Laval) to the north, after which it flows into the St. Lawrence River at the eastern tip of the Island of Montreal. Île Bizard is an island near the Island of Montreal in the Hochelaga Archipelago region. History Historically named Île Bonaventure, by 1723 it had come to be named Île Bizard, after Jacques Bizard, to whom it was conceded as a fief in 1678, part of the seigneurial system of New France. The island was also used by the settlers of New France, as a way to get timber into Montreal from the river using timber rafting. Modern It was formerly a separate municipality named St Raphael de L'Île-Bizard, but was forcefully merged with of the city of Montreal, and made into the borough of L'Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève. The Island of Montreal (french: Île de Montréal) is a large island in southwestern Quebec, Canada, that is the site of a number of municipalities including most of the city of Montreal and is the most populous island in Canada. The Îles Laval are an island grouping in the Rivière des Prairies in southwestern Quebec, part of the Hochelaga Archipelago. Formerly an independent municipality (Les Îles-Laval), they became part of the city of Laval on August 6, 1965. Geography Located northeast of Île Bizard between the Island of Montreal and Île Jésus (Laval Island), they include Île Bigras, Île Pariseau, Île Verte and Île Ronde. Sainte-Dorothée, Quebec
Sainte-Dorothée is a district in Laval, Quebec. It was a separate city until the municipal mergers on August 6, 1965. The Sainte-Dorothée that was known for forest and farmlands is no longer what it used to be. It took a giant transformation during the last decade with the arrival of SmartCentre (formerly Mega Centre) Sainte-Dorothée and Mega Centre Notre-Dame. It began with the construction of Canadian Tire, IGA & followed with the first Wal-Mart Canada in the western Laval area. The expansion has never stopped since. It now has almost every major department store, restaurant, hundreds of boutiques and two locations open 24 hours. The area also saw a rise in demand for residential development, possibly due to the " Mega Mall" alongside the Highway 13 or the other way around as the mall was built to accommodate the growing number of families looking for affordable homes near the Montreal area.
