Dungeon-crawl
A dungeon crawl is a type of scenario in fantasy role-playing games in which heroes navigate a labyrinth environment (a " dungeon"), battling various monsters, avoiding traps, solving puzzles, and looting any treasure they may find. Video games and board games which predominantly feature dungeon crawl elements are considered to be a genre. An action role-playing game (often abbreviated action RPG or ARPG) is a subgenre of video games that combines core elements from both the action game and role-playing genre. Definition The games emphasize real-time combat where the player has direct control over the characters as opposed to turn or menu-based combat while still having a focus on character's Stats in order to determine relative strength and abilities. These games often use action game combat systems similar to hack and slash or shooter games. Wizardry
''Wizardry'' is a series of role-playing video games, developed by Sir-Tech, that were highly influential in the evolution of modern role-playing video games. The original ''Wizardry'' was a significant influence on early console role-playing games such as ''Final Fantasy'' and ''Dragon Quest''. Originally made for the Apple II, the games were later ported to other platforms. The last game in the original series by Sir-Tech was ''Wizardry 8'', released in 2001. There have since been various spin-off titles developed for the Japanese market. Development ''Wizardry'' began as a simple dungeon crawl by Andrew C. Greenberg and Robert Woodhead. ''Gloomhaven'' is a cooperative board game for one to four players designed by Isaac Childres and published by Cephalofair Games in 2017. It is a campaign-based dungeon crawl game including a narrative campaign, 95 unique playable scenarios, and 17 playable classes. Since its introduction the game has been acclaimed by reviewers, and has been described as one of the best board games ever made. Gameplay ''Gloomhaven'' is a fantasy-themed, campaign-based tactical skirmish game, in which players try to triumph in combat-based scenarios which scale in difficulty depending on the number of players. ''pedit5'', alternately called ''The Dungeon'', is a 1975 dungeon crawl role-playing video game developed for the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's PLATO computer network by Rusty Rutherford. In it, the player controls a character exploring a fixed, single-level dungeon containing randomly-generated monster encounters and treasure. When they encounter a monster, they can fight the monster with a weapon or spells, or attempt to flee. Characters can be saved between sessions. Rutherford developed the game over four to six weeks in late 1975 as a computerized take on the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' role-playing game; it was named ''pedit5'' as it was stored in the fifth "pedit" slot his school group had available. Cosmic Soldier (MSX)
is a role-playing video game for MSX home computers and is the first game in the ''Cosmic Soldier'' series. It was published in 1985 by Kogado Studio. The game was ported to the NEC PC-8801 with an updated interface and graphics. The game uses a dialog conversation system, where the player can recruit allies by speaking to them, choose whether to kill or spare an enemy, and engage enemies in conversation, similar to the later ''Megami Tensei'' franchise. Battles are fought in a turn-based style. The game displays some nudity on the title screen. Legacy The 1987 sequel, ''Psychic War: Cosmic Soldier 2'', was originally released for the MSX2 computer in Japan. ''Telengard'' is a 1982 role-playing dungeon crawler video game developed by Daniel Lawrence and published by Avalon Hill. The player explores a dungeon, fights monsters with magic, and avoids traps in real-time without any set mission other than surviving. Lawrence first wrote the game as '' DND'', a 1976 version of ''Dungeons & Dragons'' for the DECsystem-10 mainframe computer.
